Superman (2025) has the ingredients of a fresh take: a vulnerable hero, a sprawling cast and a world that already feels in motion. But in this review’s view, those ingredients compete rather than cohere. The film’s ensemble and franchise setup crowd out the character at its center, leaving an energetic but frustratingly generic Superman story. That is a critical judgment, not a consensus: other viewers may find its compassion and imperfection the point.
A crowded film that loses sight of its central hero
James Gunn wrote and directed Superman, with Peter Safran and Gunn as producers. David Corenswet plays Superman and Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor. The official cast also includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell. That is a substantial roster for a film whose most important job is still to make us understand one man.

A large cast is not a flaw by itself. The problem is what the film asks that cast to do. The Justice Gang, other supporting figures and additional villains all compete for attention, while the story also has to establish a broader DC world. The result can feel less like a focused character drama than a busy introduction to several future stories. Superman is present throughout, but the film does not always give his choices and inner life enough room to anchor the spectacle.
That concern echoes two separate negative readings. Tom’s Guide argues that the character count reduces Superman’s prominence, that Krypto functions as a rescue device and that Lex is less threatening than he should be. Axios likewise says there are too many characters to keep track of, even as it praises Corenswet’s heart in the role. The question raised by Tom’s Guide’s framing, “Did we see the same movie?”, captures how differently the film’s crowdedness can land for viewers.

Does Superman’s vulnerability deepen him—or weaken the drama?
Gunn’s Superman is not presented as an untouchable ideal. The film emphasizes a hero who feels fear, makes mistakes and tries to choose well anyway. In an exchange with Luthor, Kal says: “I’m as human as anyone! I love, I get scared. I wake up every morning, and despite not knowing what to do, I put one foot in front of the other, and I try to make the best choices that I can. I screw up all the time. But that is being human, and that’s my greatest strength. And someday, I hope, for the sake of the world, you understand that it’s yours too.”
That idea gives the film a genuine thematic center: compassion is not a weakness, and moral effort matters even when perfection is impossible. In a Fall 2025 essay for SFRA Review, Jeremy Brett reads the film’s vulnerability and imperfections as a way to connect Superman to human nature and values. This is a persuasive counter-reading. The character’s fallibility may be an intentional departure from a distant, flawless icon, rather than a failure to understand him.
But intention and execution are different questions. A compassionate hero needs consequential choices and dramatic space in which those choices can register. When the surrounding cast and world-building keep pulling the focus outward, the film’s central idea risks sounding more clearly in dialogue than it feels in the action. The tension is not whether Superman should be vulnerable; it is whether the film lets that vulnerability shape the story instead of making it one more feature in an already crowded package.
Corenswet brings warmth, but the supporting pieces do not always help
Corenswet supplies an appealing sincerity that helps the film’s better moments. Axios’s praise for the heart he brings to Superman points to a real counterweight to the overload critique: the lead performance gives the character an approachable quality and makes his compassion legible. That warmth is one reason the film can feel promising even when its structure frustrates.

The supporting characters are more uneven in their effect. Krypto offers an obvious source of charm, but when he functions as a convenient rescue mechanism, the character can feel more useful to the plot than organically integrated into it. Lex Luthor, meanwhile, ought to provide a pressure that tests Superman’s values and agency. Tom’s Guide’s criticism that he feels less threatening identifies a broader issue: if the antagonist does not create enough dramatic force, the ensemble’s activity cannot substitute for a compelling central conflict.

“Generic” here does not mean that the film lacks individual ideas. Its compassionate conception of Superman is distinct, and the character’s willingness to admit fear and failure offers a clear thematic direction. The generic feeling comes instead from the way familiar superhero ingredients accumulate: a packed team, multiple threats, comic relief and setup for a larger universe. When those elements take precedence over the specific emotional and moral problem facing Superman, the movie can feel like a franchise launch assembled from recognizable parts.

For a useful way to judge the film, ask four questions:
- Focus: Does the story spend enough time on Superman’s own decisions, or does the ensemble repeatedly take the spotlight?
- Agency: Do his mistakes and vulnerability shape what happens, or do other characters and plot devices repeatedly solve the problem for him?
- Tone: Do humor and supporting heroes make this world more vivid, or do they blur the film into familiar superhero shorthand?
- Theme: Is compassion dramatized through the conflict, or mainly explained in speeches while the franchise machinery competes for attention?
Those are critical questions, not measurable rankings. A viewer who values an expansive, playful DC world may see the same crowded cast as a strength. Someone looking for a concentrated Superman story may find it a distraction.

Superman is not without a point of view. Its commitment to an imperfect, compassionate hero gives it a meaningful foundation, and Corenswet brings warmth to the role. But the film’s many characters and world-building demands keep tugging attention away from the person the title promises to center. For this review, that imbalance is the decisive flaw: the movie feels overstuffed, less dramatically focused than it should be, and too reliant on familiar franchise machinery to make its ideas land with full force.
James Gunn’s film was released internationally beginning July 9, 2025, with U.S. theatrical and IMAX release on July 11, 2025, according to DC. Amazon’s entertainment coverage says it is available to buy or rent on Prime Video; viewing options and prices can vary by territory.
