Edwina Bartholomew’s 2024 disclosure that she and husband Neil Varcoe lived in separate homes for much of the week is no longer an accurate description of the arrangement later reported. By June 2026, Bartholomew said the family had moved out of the city and she travelled to Sydney for work on Sunrise.
What Edwina Bartholomew disclosed in 2024
A 3 March 2024 PerthNow report relayed details from Bartholomew’s column in Stellar magazine. She described Varcoe living in the country with the dog while she lived in the city with their children. The family travelled between the homes or met during weekends.
“My husband lives in the country with the dog and I live in the city with the kids,” Bartholomew was quoted as saying. She also described the weekend trips: “Each weekend, we traipse back and forth between the two or meet somewhere in the middle, Cameron Diaz-style.”
Bartholomew framed the arrangement as an extension of sleeping separately and said the family valued their time together. The PerthNow story is secondary coverage of her Stellar column, not the original column itself.

How the arrangement changed by 2026
May: a split week between Sydney and Carcoar
In a 17 May 2026 interview, TV WEEK described Bartholomew spending three days a week in Sydney for Sunrise and four days in Carcoar, where Varcoe and the children lived. At that point, she said there was no imminent move planned and that the setup was working: “It’s working well right now so I don’t anticipate an imminent move.”
June: the family’s country base
On 16 June 2026, 7NEWS reported on Bartholomew’s guest editorial for Australian Women’s Weekly, quoting her as saying, “We no longer live in the city.” The report said the children stayed in the country with Varcoe while Bartholomew travelled to Sydney for Sunrise.

The June report connected the move partly to a difficult period involving Varcoe’s chronic fatigue and Bartholomew’s health. Those are personal circumstances as described in the report, not a general explanation for why couples might live apart.

The two accounts describe different stages, not necessarily a contradiction. In 2024, the couple’s homes were described as separate weekday bases, with the children in the city with Bartholomew and time together on weekends. By May 2026, Carcoar was the family’s base for most of the week while Bartholomew stayed in Sydney for work; by June, she said the family no longer lived in the city.

What the reports do—and do not—say
- They describe a living and work arrangement; they do not say Bartholomew and Varcoe separated.
- Bartholomew’s comments explain her family’s circumstances. They are not a recommendation or formula for other couples.
- PerthNow relayed Bartholomew’s anecdote that “Hundreds of women” messaged her after an earlier discussion. That is her reported account, not a survey or evidence of how common separate homes are.
