There is no official ranking of Sunderland AFC’s most famous supporters, but an evidence-led selection spans music, athletics, football and television: Dave Stewart, Steve Cram, Sir Tim Rice, Jordan Pickford, Jordan Henderson, Jill Scott, Chris Hughes and George Clarke. Their documented connections vary, so this is a curated list rather than a definitive fame league table.
How to read this list
Fame is subjective, and the available sources do not measure or rank the public profile of Sunderland supporters. This selection balances public recognition with the strength of each person’s documented connection to the club. The Premier League names Stewart, Cram and Rice among Sunderland’s famous fans; Sunderland Echo coverage records connections for several others, while BBC Sport identifies Hughes as a Sunderland fan.
Eight famous people connected with Sunderland
1. Dave Stewart
The Eurythmics musician is a Sunderland native and a supporter of his hometown club. The Premier League’s profile recalls his childhood trips to Roker Park and quotes him saying he “was only interested in playing football for Sunderland growing up.” It also notes that, while living in the United States, he can become frustrated when he cannot find Sunderland matches on television.
2. Steve Cram
The former athlete is described as an avid Sunderland supporter by the Sunderland Echo. The paper also notes his support for the club’s Foundation of Light, adding a community connection to his fandom. The Premier League includes him among Sunderland’s famous fans.

3. Sir Tim Rice
The songwriter is named by the Premier League as one of Sunderland’s other famous supporters. The source establishes his inclusion but offers less detail about his personal history as a fan than it does for Stewart, so his connection is best stated without embellishment.
4. Jordan Pickford
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford grew up in the area and came through Sunderland’s academy, according to a Sunderland Echo gallery that identifies him as a fan. His local upbringing and academy route give his connection a direct Sunderland context.

5. Jordan Henderson
The Sunderland Echo’s gallery caption describes footballer Jordan Henderson as a Sunderland fan who grew up in the area and came through the club’s academy. That local newspaper attribution is the basis for including him here.
6. Jill Scott
Former England international and television personality Jill Scott attended Sunderland matches with her grandfather as a child, the Sunderland Echo reports. The family detail makes her link more specific than a passing public association with the club.

7. Chris Hughes
BBC Sport identifies television personality and former Love Island contestant Chris Hughes as a Sunderland fan. He co-hosted the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast with England and Manchester City defender Kyle Walker. In a BBC Sport report published on 6 June 2024, Walker praised the passion of supporters in one-team cities, naming Sunderland alongside Newcastle and Leeds.
8. George Clarke
George Clarke appears as a related topic on Sunderland Echo gallery pages, but the available material does not establish the details of his supporter history. He is included here with that limitation made clear, rather than presented as equally well documented as the other seven. Readers seeking a stronger documented alternative can look to Martin O’Neill: the Sunderland Echo reports that O’Neill described himself as a childhood Sunderland fanatic and later managed the club.

What makes these connections different?
Some supporters have a hometown or family story; others are named by a club or league source, or identified by a news outlet. Those are useful distinctions, not a ranking of loyalty. Stewart’s memories of Roker Park and Pickford’s local upbringing and academy history are particularly clear local ties, while Rice’s inclusion rests on the Premier League’s identification of him as a famous fan.
