Diana Athill’s Stet: An Editor’s Life is a memoir of the books she helped shape and the writers she worked with at André Deutsch Ltd—not a comprehensive history of the English publishing industry. Its distinctive view comes from an editor who cared deeply about choosing and editing books, while recognizing that running a publishing house also meant managing its commercial and practical machinery.
What Stet is—and what it sets out to do
Athill says she did not set out to write a history of British publishing in the second half of the twentieth century. She wanted to preserve some of her own experience and the people she had encountered before those memories disappeared. The book is therefore personal and selective: an editor’s account of a working life, rather than a data-led institutional history. In her extract for The Guardian, she explains that the company archive had gone to Tulsa and that she was not writing the comprehensive account a publisher friend had urged her to produce.
That distinction makes the memoir’s focus clearer. Athill describes publishing as a complex business involving buying and selling, manufacturing or arranging the manufacture of books, sourcing materials, and handling legal rights. Her own interest centered on selecting and editing books. As she puts it: “So I was not a publisher. I was an editor.”
The editors, authors and work behind the books
Athill’s publishing career was closely associated with André Deutsch’s British company. In her account, she helped establish André Deutsch’s second publishing firm in 1952 and spent nearly fifty years in the trade; Grove Atlantic describes her tenure as an editor as fifty years. The publisher’s description of Stet names V. S. Naipaul, Philip Roth, Mordecai Richler and Norman Mailer among the writers she edited. A 2000 Publishers Weekly review also identifies Jean Rhys, Brian Moore, Molly Keane and John Updike.

These names signal the literary company surrounding Athill’s working life, but they are not a substitute for the book’s more particular interest: the decisions, relationships and editorial labor involved in bringing writing into print. The memoir offers a view from inside that work, not a claim to represent every publisher, editor or author in postwar Britain.
Why the title is Stet
In copy-editing, stet means “let it stand.” Athill describes the printer’s convention: when a copy-editor wants to rescue text marked for deletion, they put a row of dots beneath it and write “Stet” in the margin. The instruction reverses the deletion and leaves the words in place. Athill connects that editorial gesture to the memoir itself: an attempt to preserve her experiences and the people she remembers.

Which edition is documented?
Grove Atlantic lists a paperback edition of Stet: An Editor’s Life with 256 pages, publication date March 21, 2002, and ISBN 978-0-8021-3862-0. Publishers Weekly’s 2000 review records a different Grove edition and ISBN, 0-8021-1683-3; the two identifiers belong to distinct edition records and should not be treated as interchangeable. The cited records do not establish which edition the 2024 Scroll.in recommendation referred to, or whether either edition is currently in stock.
Scroll.in’s Sunday book recommendation places the memoir in the context of Athill’s career, the writers she encountered and changes in English-language publishing. That is useful framing for a reader approaching the book, but the memoir’s own stated purpose is narrower: to let Athill’s experience as an editor—and the people and books within it—stand on the page.
