The Mirror of Wonders and Other Tales brings together animal-centered stories by Syed Rafiq Hussain, translated from Urdu by Saleem Kidwai. Rather than dividing the world neatly into kind humans and dangerous animals, the stories trace how captivity, hunger, fear, attachment and human choices shape encounters between them.

What is The Mirror of Wonders and Other Tales?

The book is Saleem Kidwai’s English translation of Hussain’s Urdu collection Aina-e-Hairat, published by Yoda Press. It was Hussain’s only short-story collection. The stories first appeared in the literary journal Saqi in the late 1930s and early 1940s; the collection was published posthumously in 1944 and, according to Sayari Debnath’s January 5, 2025 feature for Scroll.in, reissued in Karachi in 2002.

The stories put animals at the center of their conflicts, but their subject is not wildlife in isolation. They examine what happens when human lives and animal lives meet through hunting, domestication, captivity, dependence or danger.

How the stories portray animals and people

The collection resists a simple moral contrast between humane people and savage animals. In Debnath’s account, human violence is often driven by greed or rage, while an animal’s violence may arise from hunger or immediate danger. That difference does not make every encounter easy to judge; it directs attention to the conditions that produce it.

Several stories make the relationship intimate as well as dangerous. Animals can be attached to people, depend on them, or be confined by them. The consequences do not always match what a human expects from that relationship.

Stories of captivity, attachment and survival

“Atonement”

A man-eating tigress and her cubs are captured and killed. The story also follows an old man’s anguish over killing animals and a caged tiger’s memories, setting human fear and animal confinement beside one another.

“Kalua”

Kalua, a dog, forms an attachment to a child. When the child grows up, that affection is not returned: the child no longer recognizes him. The story turns on the painful gap between an animal’s continuing bond and a person’s changed life.

“Biru”

A nilgai domesticated for years returns to the wild, where freedom also means confronting dangers it has not faced in captivity. The story complicates any assumption that release alone resolves what confinement has changed.

“Gori ho Gori”

After a flood, a human mother grieves for her child while a cow grieves for her calf. Their losses create a parallel between human and animal maternal care, emphasizing shared compassion rather than a boundary between the two.

“A Nemesis for Every Tyrant”

Hunting and predation are considered through human hunters, jungle predators and an elephant that has harmed villagers and other animals. The story places different forms of violence in the same frame rather than treating the human role as automatically benign.

Other stories

“Shirin-Farhad” is about two cats; “The Voiceless” follows an unlikely alliance between two unwanted creatures. Together with the other tales, they broaden the collection beyond the direct clash between people and wildlife to include companionship and vulnerability.

Hussain’s reported relationship with animals and Urdu

Debnath connects Hussain’s attention to animals with years he spent posted in the Terai region of the Himalayas. The same feature also reports that he hunted deer and rabbits and was fascinated by big-game hunting. These biographical details sit uneasily beside his sympathetic animal stories, a tension that makes the writing more complex than a simple declaration of affection for wildlife.

In translated autobiographical essays quoted by Debnath, Hussain says, “I have never willingly allowed the presence of pet animals in the house.” The feature also presents his remarks that he “cannot write Urdu at all” and that English is “a train” while Urdu is “a bullock cart.” These are translated statements as quoted in the feature, not independently checked English originals.

Who may find the book compelling?

Readers drawn to literary stories about human-animal relationships may find the collection especially rewarding for its range: grief and maternal care, loyalty and estrangement, captivity and release, hunting and survival. Its animal protagonists do not simply serve as symbols; their circumstances expose the power, dependence and vulnerability built into encounters with people.
