Its central tease is Will’s connection to Vecna and the Upside Down—and whether he can turn that link against the threat closing in on Hawkins. Volume 2 and the series finale have since premiered.
What does the Volume 2 trailer show?
Netflix Tudum describes the trailer as two minutes long. It presents the Hawkins group racing to uncover the town’s darkest secrets while Vecna moves closer and promises a “new world.” Its flashes include an electrocauted Demogorgon and Dustin and Steve making what the Tudum article calls a fight-to-the-death pact. These are promotional images and teases, not confirmation of how those moments resolve.
The emotional center is Will’s fear that the group has already lost. In dialogue snippets reproduced by Netflix Tudum’s trailer coverage, Will tells Joyce, “We failed” and “We never stood a chance.” Joyce replies, “It’s not over” and “Not by a long shot.” The article presents these as brief excerpts; they should not be taken as the full context of the scenes.
Why is Will central to the story?
The trailer asks how Will might channel the mysterious powers revealed at the end of Volume 1. Ross Duffer, a co-creator, executive producer, writer, and director, told Tudum that the creative team had long understood Will’s connection to Vecna and the Upside Down. He said one early idea for the season was to explore what might happen if Will could harness that connection against the villains, and that bringing the story back to Will felt natural because he was the child taken in Season 1.

Duffer described Will as needing to be the key to ending Vecna. That explains the season’s intended focus; it does not, by itself, establish that Will acts alone or determine the eventual outcome. The trailer’s tension pairs his personal history with a threat that reaches beyond him.
What is the situation in Hawkins?
Netflix’s official Season 5 synopsis places the story in fall 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the Rifts, Vecna is missing, and the government has imposed a military quarantine while hunting Eleven. The group’s search for Vecna unfolds against that larger crisis, making the trailer’s promise of a “new world” a threat to the town and more than a private confrontation.

What did the trailer establish—and what did it leave open?
The trailer established the season’s emphasis: Hawkins faces an escalating crisis, the group is still confronting Vecna, and Will’s longstanding connection to the Upside Down is central to the story being told. It did not settle how that connection works, whether Will can control it, or how the conflict ends. Duffer’s comments describe the creative intention behind the season, while the trailer itself offers a preview rather than a complete account of the plot.
