Spoiler warning: This review discusses major plot and character developments in the three episodes of Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 2. It does not cover the separate series finale.
Season 5, Volume 2 is watchable for viewers invested in Hawkins, but it feels more like an extended runway to the finale than a satisfying installment in its own right. It advances the mythology and gives several characters meaningful emotional turns; still, repetition, long conversations and a lingering sense of incompletion weaken its momentum. “Running out of steam” is a fair criticism of this batch’s pacing, not a settled verdict on the season or its audience.
What Season 5, Volume 2 includes
Netflix released the fifth and final season in three parts: four episodes on November 26, 2025; three episodes on Christmas Day, December 25; and the series finale on New Year’s Eve. Netflix listed 5 p.m. Pacific as the release time for each batch. Volume 2 is the three Christmas episodes, not the finale. Does Volume 2 feel like a complete installment?
Not quite. The central frustration is structural: the three episodes push the larger story onward but do not consistently feel like self-contained chapters. Jack Shepherd’s GamesRadar+ review calls the episodes “highly watchable” for viewers already invested in the series, while describing the batch as repetitive and incomplete, with substantial work left for the finale. Nick Schager is harsher in The Daily Beast, characterizing the installment as a “limp to the finish line” and arguing that extended conversations interrupt the drama.

Those are two individual critical responses, not a representative poll or review consensus. Their shared concern is nevertheless useful: the volume often appears to be holding back its major payoff for the final episode. Ross Duffer, the series co-creator, described the end of Episode 7 as carrying “a sense of dread or uncertainty that pervades.” That uncertainty can create anticipation, but here it also reinforces the feeling that the batch stops just as it is meant to arrive somewhere.
Does the story move forward?
Yes, though more in terms of positioning the final confrontation than resolving the conflict. Netflix’s episode explainer says the group gets through the heavily guarded MAC-Z gate, while the volume ends with Eleven’s fate still unresolved. Vecna has gathered kidnapped children as part of a plan involving Hawkins and another world. The movement is real, but the audience is left waiting for the consequences and decisive confrontation that would make those steps feel like a payoff rather than setup. What does Volume 2 reveal about the Upside Down and the Abyss?
The mythology gets an important clarification: the Upside Down is described as a wormhole connecting two points in time and space, while the Abyss is a separate dimension connected to Earth through it. That distinction gives the story a clearer framework for the connection between Hawkins and the other world, and for Vecna’s plan. The explanation is consequential, although explaining the cosmology is not the same as delivering dramatic momentum. Viewers who want the final conflict more than a fresh layer of lore may find the revelations useful but not fully satisfying on their own. Netflix attributes these details to dialogue in the episodes and explains how Holly’s escape relates to Vecna’s plan in its ending explainer.
Which character moments provide the emotional payoff?
Will comes out to his friends
Will tells the group he is gay, and they respond with support. The moment gives his long-running personal struggle a direct emotional resolution and establishes a new confidence as he heads toward the final battle. Duffer said the storyline had been building for a long time, and that Will’s acceptance would let him enter the fight with a maturity and confidence he had not previously had. That is the co-creator’s stated intent; the scene’s value for viewers rests in the character development itself.

Nancy and Jonathan end their relationship
Nancy and Jonathan have an honest conversation that ends in a breakup. It is a significant turn for two characters whose relationship has been part of the series for years, and a rare moment in a volume otherwise oriented toward the ensemble’s impending crisis. Director Shawn Levy praised the exchange as “a level of honesty that is an all-timer of a Jonathan–Nancy scene.” That is Levy’s assessment, but the scene does give the relationship a clear, emotionally legible outcome rather than simply postponing it.
Is the mythology or the character drama more successful?
The strongest case for the volume is that it does more than merely delay the finale: it clarifies the supernatural stakes and gives Will, Nancy and Jonathan consequential developments. The weaker case is that these elements are arranged inside a three-episode bridge whose dramatic shape is hard to distinguish from setup. Character scenes can provide meaningful closure even when the central action remains unresolved, and the mythology explanation matters to the final conflict; neither fully compensates for the uneven pace. The result is a batch with valuable pieces but an incomplete overall arc.

Who is likely to enjoy these episodes?
- Viewers already invested in the series: The character turns and mythology developments make the episodes worthwhile, even if the installment is not especially self-contained.
- Viewers looking for a complete middle chapter: The unresolved conflict and forward-heavy structure may feel frustrating, especially if a batch is expected to deliver its own strong arc.
- Viewers primarily seeking the finale’s answers: Volume 2 advances the setup, but leaves the main confrontation and Eleven’s fate unresolved.
How much weight should the ratings context carry?
Netflix reported 59.6 million views for Season 5, Volume 1 in its premiere week and 102.6 million global views after four weeks; it also said Seasons 1–4 had garnered more than 1.2 billion views to date, and that Volume 1 reached No. 1 in 90 countries in its premiere week.
