The story picks up in fall 1987, with Hawkins scarred by the Rifts, the town under military quarantine and the group trying to find the missing Vecna.
What the Stranger Things 5 trailer shows
The trailer places the characters in a Hawkins that is no longer an ordinary town. Netflix’s official synopsis says the Rifts have left it scarred, while a military quarantine constrains the residents and Eleven is being hunted and forced into hiding. The group’s immediate goal is to locate and kill Vecna, who is missing.
The season also approaches the anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance, bringing renewed dread to the story. Netflix’s trailer coverage describes the Hawkins crew as back together and says Vecna is unleashing new nightmares.
Series co-creator Ross Duffer said the season begins “a little bit in chaos” because the heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4. Executive producer and director Shawn Levy described the action and visual effects as “next level,” while saying the emotional center remained the same. Netflix’s account of the lockdown also quotes Matt Duffer saying the characters were “not experiencing normal life. Nothing in Hawkins is normal anymore.”
