The Demogorgons were not missing because the finale revealed a precise hiding place for them. Matt Duffer said Vecna was caught off guard by the attack and that the creatures were “there somewhere” in the Abyss. The Duffers also chose to keep the climax centered on Vecna and the Mind Flayer rather than add another monster fight.
What Matt Duffer said about where the Demogorgons were
Asked why the creatures did not appear when the characters reached the Abyss, Matt Duffer gave a deliberately loose answer: “Mainly it’s just that Vecna was not expecting this sneak attack on his home turf. Never in a million years could he even imagine that. They’re there somewhere.”
That establishes the creators’ in-story explanation, but not an exact location or a detailed account of what the Demogorgons were doing. Matt described the Abyss as “a giant, desolate planet” and said the creatures were not part of a large civilization. The interview does not lay out an unseen deployment plan or say precisely where they were during the battle. TheWrap’s January 1, 2026 interview with Matt and Ross Duffer is the direct source for these explanations.
Why the finale focused on Vecna and the Mind Flayer
The explanation was also a creative choice. Matt Duffer said the team considered staging a Demogorgon fight alongside the Mind Flayer battle, but the Mind Flayer was already a giant creature capable of attacking the heroes on its own. He said the creators wanted the climax to stay focused on Vecna and the Mind Flayer, which had been absent that season.

Matt also cited “demo fatigue,” saying he felt the team had done what it wanted with the creatures in “Sorcerer.” In other words, the Demogorgons’ absence reflects both the story’s surprise attack and the creators’ preference not to repeat a monster confrontation at the climax. Those are complementary explanations, not evidence that the finale had a fully specified off-screen battle plan.
Netflix Tudum’s January 2, 2026 interview frames the ending as a coming-of-age finale. A later Netflix production feature published June 17, 2026 describes the Mind Flayer pursuing the heroes across the Abyss, reinforcing the scale of the threat the creators chose to foreground.

Was a Demogorgon egg field cut from the finale?
The Duffers discussed an idea for a field of Demogorgon eggs as an “Aliens” homage. But this was not a scene removed from a completed or filmed finale: Ross Duffer clarified that it belonged to a “three-hour version” that “was never written.” It should be understood as an unrealized concept, not a deleted sequence.
