The zombie-filled episode is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, Episode 3, “Shuttle to Kenfori.” Pike and Dr. M’Benga encounter zombie-like humans and Klingons on Kenfori while seeking treatment for Captain Marie Batel. The episode’s official recap confirms those details, but official season materials do not identify the specific “classic Star Trek trope” it supposedly twists.
Which Strange New Worlds episode has zombies?
“Shuttle to Kenfori” is the third episode of Season 3. StarTrek.com’s recap of the following episode, “A Space Adventure Hour,” says Pike and Dr. M’Benga enter disputed Klingon space in search of treatment for Captain Marie Batel and encounter zombie-like humans and Klingons on Kenfori. A July 30, 2025 episode of the fan podcast Subspace Radio also identifies “Shuttle to Kenfori” as the season’s third episode, calling it the one with the moss zombies.
The official recap also points to M’Benga’s confrontation with Bytha, a Klingon, and the consequences of M’Benga’s past actions. That gives the episode’s horror setting a personal and political dimension alongside the urgent mission to help Batel. Read StarTrek.com’s recap of “A Space Adventure Hour”.
What classic Star Trek trope does the episode twist?
The specific trope is not named in the official materials reviewed. StarTrek.com’s Season 3 preview describes the series as moving across genres and includes cast and producer comments about horror, but it does not explain the zombie episode’s particular construction or say which familiar Star Trek story pattern it reworks. Calling out a specific trope as the creators’ intent would go beyond what those sources establish.

There is still a reasonable way to understand the headline’s “twist” framing: the episode brings zombie horror into a series built around new planets, ideas, and encounters. That is interpretation, not a confirmed statement of the episode’s stated purpose. The broader season approach is reflected in actor Anson Mount’s description of the show as “planet of the week, big idea of the week.” Executive producer Henry Alonso Myers said the season includes “some shocking moments of horror.” Those remarks describe the series and season, not this episode alone. How the zombie episode fits Season 3
Season 3’s creature lineup ranges beyond the Kenfori zombies: StarTrek.com’s creature feature also lists Klingons, Vezda, and Gorn. The official preview presents the season as genre-spanning, with horror among its modes, rather than as a single-style run of episodes. This context supports describing “Shuttle to Kenfori” as part of a broader variety of stories, but it does not establish a particular trope the episode is meant to overturn.
