What is Stanley Tucci’s high-protein lunch?
It is a tuna melt, not the separate tuna-and-tomato lunch Tucci discussed in a July 2025 story. In an EatingWell article syndicated by AOL on January 17, 2025, Tucci described the sandwich as a favorite quick lunch and recalled initially thinking the combination sounded strange before trying it in college. His verdict: “It’s genius.”
What goes into the tuna melt?
- Tuna packed in water or brine
- Finely diced red onion and celery
- Mayonnaise, salt and pepper
- Emmentaler, Tucci’s preferred cheese for melting
The source does not give exact amounts, specify the bread, or provide a complete cooking method. It also does not name a tuna brand or report a comparison between ingredients.

- Drain the tuna and flake it into a bowl.
- Stir in finely diced red onion and celery, enough mayonnaise to bind the mixture, and salt and pepper.
- Spoon the tuna salad onto bread and top it with Emmentaler.
- Toast or broil until the bread is crisp and the cheese has melted. Watch closely under a broiler, since browning can happen quickly.
If Emmentaler is unavailable, another cheese that melts well is a reasonable cook’s substitution, but it is not the cheese named as Tucci’s preference in the report.
How much protein does it provide?
The lunch is described as high-protein, with tuna as its main protein ingredient and cheese contributing more. The report provides no serving size, nutrition label, or grams of protein. A reliable number would require fixed quantities and a defined serving, so this account does not assign the sandwich a protein total.

Don’t confuse it with Tucci’s other tuna lunch
A separate EatingWell story syndicated by AOL on July 22, 2025 covers a different lunch: tomato sauce with tuna, cannellini beans, basil, olive oil and bread. Those ingredients are not part of the tuna melt described in the January story.
