What certification records can—and can’t—confirm
Certification awards are a separate measure from estimated worldwide sales. The Recording Industry Association of America describes its Gold and Platinum program as a recorded-music benchmark and provides a searchable certification database. A certification is evidence of an award under that program; it should not be treated as interchangeable with BestSellingAlbums.org’s estimated totals.
French certification records from SNEP include several albums in this ranking, among them Doggystyle, R&G The Masterpiece, Paid Tha Cost to Be Da Boss, Tha Last Meal and Tha Blue Carpet Treatment. Those records confirm certifications in France, not the exact worldwide sales figures shown above. Death Row Records’ artist biography separately gives rounded claims of more than 23 million U.S. albums and 35 million worldwide; these are label-level totals, not an album-by-album audited breakdown.
