At the September 11, 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, Katy Perry said the LGBTQ+ community had taught her that a person can be both kind and c—. In audience footage, Taylor Swift smiles and nods toward Jack Antonoff as he points at her. The gestures are visible; the idea that Swift was signaling agreement is an interpretation, not something the clip can establish as fact.
What Katy Perry said in her acceptance speech
Perry delivered the line while accepting the Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 VMAs. Reports quoted her saying the LGBTQ+ community had taught her “that you can be both kind and c—.” The remark drew applause. Billboard’s account of Perry’s speech reports the moment and its context.
What the footage shows Taylor Swift doing
In a clip shared after Perry’s speech, Swift turns toward Antonoff, smiles and nods. Antonoff points toward Swift and laughs. That is the observable exchange. Coverage described Swift as reacting to Perry’s quip, but neither a smile nor a nod proves precisely what Swift was thinking or communicating. E! News’ report on the reaction describes the clip.
Other reports noted that Swift gave Perry a standing ovation and sang and danced during Perry’s medley. Those details add context to the night, but they do not make the meaning of the brief exchange certain. Us Weekly’s coverage describes Swift’s response at the ceremony.

Why Jack Antonoff pointed at Swift
Antonoff’s point toward Swift, followed by laughter, makes it plausible that he connected Perry’s line to her in that moment. The video does not include an explanation from Antonoff or Swift, however, so the reason for the gesture cannot be stated definitively. Headlines and captions often supply a knowing or humorous reading; those are interpretations of the exchange, not a verified account of either person’s intent.
The longer context: Swift and Perry’s reconciliation
Swift and Perry had a widely reported public feud and later reconciled. Perry has said the media exaggerated their conflict and that she was grateful they “did get to make up publicly.” In a 2020 conversation with Howard Stern, as quoted by Bustle, Perry said: “Gossip in life can take the elevator but the truth takes the stairs, it just takes time.” That is Perry’s public description of their history; it does not establish what either singer privately felt during the VMAs exchange.
