Halloween offered a rare glimpse of Silicon Valley’s usually low-profile technology stars: children came to their homes for candy, while neighbors took in elaborate, often low-tech decorations. Tekla S. Perry’s IEEE Spectrum feature recounts appearances by Marissa Mayer, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page and Laurene Powell Jobs—but it is a historical snapshot, not a guide to current homes, access or Halloween plans.

When tech celebrities became neighborhood Halloween sights

In her IEEE Spectrum feature, former editor and Palo Alto-based freelance writer Tekla S. Perry describes Halloween as an occasion when prominent technology figures briefly stepped into view. Children lined up for candy at some executives’ homes, bringing the familiar neighborhood ritual into contact with Silicon Valley celebrity.

The article names Marissa Mayer, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page and Laurene Powell Jobs. Its reviewed page does not display a publication date, so its relative references—such as “last year” or “this year”—cannot reliably be assigned to a calendar year. The accounts should be read as period reporting, not as evidence of what those people do now.

Decorations built around pumpkins and spectacle

Perry characterizes the decorations as “often over-the-top but decidedly low-tech.” One striking example is the Halloween decorating tradition Laurene Powell Jobs continued with dozens of hand-carved jack-o’-lanterns mounted on poles. That is a qualitative description in Perry’s account, not an exact count.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The feature also describes Marissa Mayer decorating her home and using a nearby former funeral-home parking lot for a carved-pumpkin display and a Halloween party. Perry adds her own wry opinion: “My take: C’mon, if you owned a funeral home, wouldn’t you open it up for Halloween?” That line is the author’s aside, not evidence of a broader controversy.

For Larry Page’s neighborhood, Perry reports that streets near his home might be closed to traffic and no-parking signs had been posted at the time. Those details are historical observations; they should not be used as present-day traffic or access advice.

Costume ideas drawn from technology culture

The feature’s costume suggestions lean on recognizable silhouettes and devices rather than elaborate fabrication:

  • A black mock turtleneck with jeans, a technology-executive look Perry proposes.
  • A hoodie and plain T-shirt, with a ginger hair detail.
  • A generic tech-geek outfit.
  • References to devices such as the iPod, or to video-game characters.

A plain black mock turtleneck is the clearest clothing item in these suggestions. Perry does not name a brand or model, and the idea is not presented as an official or exact costume. Her mention of old iPod and iPhone cartons is anecdotal, not a reason to seek out obsolete devices.

What this Halloween feature does—and does not—document

Perry’s story captures a particular collision of celebrity, neighborhood tradition and technology-themed dress-up. It does not establish a current list of homes welcoming visitors, an annual schedule, or present-day street closures. The IEEE Spectrum page reviewed for this account gives no publication date, so the reported events cannot be dated precisely from its relative wording alone.
