Which Taylor Swift song is in The Handmaid’s Tale?
It is “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version),” Swift’s re-recording of the single associated with her 2017 album Reputation. The track appears at the start of season 6, episode 9. ABC News’ Good Morning America describes June, played by Elisabeth Moss, leading the handmaids in an uprising against the commanders; the AP reports that the song plays nearly in full over the opening scene.

Why does the song fit the scene?
Episode editor Wendy Hallam Martin said the team tried multiple songs for the moment and wanted a strong female voice and message. In remarks reported by Good Morning America from Billboard, Hallam Martin said Swift’s track delivered both lyrically and tonally, and that its refrain matched what June was doing in the scene.
Moss, the series’ lead actor and an executive producer, called it the “perfect” song for the moment. That was her assessment of the placement; it is not evidence of a broader consensus among viewers.

Is this the original 2017 recording?
No. The episode uses the Taylor’s Version re-recording, not the original recording associated with Reputation. Pitchfork reported on May 20, 2025, that the re-recorded track was not yet online or available on streaming services at that time, and that a complete Reputation (Taylor’s Version) had not been announced.
