At the 2013 People’s Choice Awards, Munn pretended to keep the award she was presenting to Swift—a gag that referenced Kanye West’s interruption of Swift in 2009. The available coverage does not establish that the two had a personal rivalry.
Other stories about Swift and celebrity “feuds” range from a documented public dispute and reconciliation to speculation built from clues such as songwriting credits or perceived silence. Those categories are not interchangeable, and coverage of public moments cannot establish the full state of anyone’s private relationships.
What happened between Taylor Swift and Olivia Munn?
At the January 9, 2013 People’s Choice Awards, Olivia Munn presented Swift with an award and jokingly held onto it. Contemporary coverage described the exchange as a prank playing on the moment Kanye West interrupted Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. UPI’s report of the ceremony and E!’s listing for Munn discussing the gag support the joke framing; neither establishes a feud between Munn and Swift. UPI’s January 10, 2013 report; E!’s interview listing.
Calling the incident a “rumored feud” risks making the rumor sound like a reported conflict. The cited accounts document an awards-show gag, not a statement of hostility from either woman.

How the celebrity stories differ in evidence
| Example | What is documented | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Olivia Munn and Swift | Munn’s 2013 awards-show prank, described in contemporaneous coverage as a joke. | Documents a public gag; does not establish a personal feud. |
| Olivia Rodrigo and Swift | Rodrigo’s 2023 comment, reported by the Los Angeles Times, and the paper’s account of speculation. | Records a public response to speculation; does not confirm a feud. |
| Katy Perry and Swift | A public dispute, Perry’s olive-branch gesture in 2018, and their appearance together in Swift’s 2019 video. | Documents a public reconciliation timeline, not every private interaction. |
| Blake Lively and Swift | Text messages disclosed in court filings and reported by the Associated Press. | Shows messages described as supportive and friendly; the litigation concerned Lively’s case involving Justin Baldoni, not a Swift feud. |
What Olivia Rodrigo said about feud speculation
In 2023, Olivia Rodrigo told Rolling Stone, “I don’t have beef with anyone.” The Los Angeles Times reported the remark while discussing theories that she and Swift were feuding. The Times characterized those theories as speculative and noted that neither artist had explicitly backed them. Rodrigo’s words should be understood in that context—not as a comment about Olivia Munn. Los Angeles Times, September 12, 2023.
Songwriting-credit discussions, fan readings of lyrics, or a perceived lack of public interaction may fuel theories, but those clues alone do not demonstrate hostility. Rodrigo’s statement is a direct, attributed comment; the feud narrative described by the Times was speculation.

Swift and Katy Perry: a public dispute followed by reconciliation
The Swift–Perry story has a clearer public timeline than the Munn rumor. TIME traces a widely discussed dispute between the singers, followed by Perry sending Swift an olive branch in 2018. They later appeared together in Swift’s 2019 “You Need to Calm Down” music video. These events support describing a public dispute and a visible reconciliation; they do not provide an independent account of every private exchange between the two. TIME’s timeline of the dispute and reconciliation.

The Associated Press reported that text messages between Swift and Blake Lively became public through litigation filings. The messages described support and a personal friendship. They surfaced in connection with Lively’s case involving Justin Baldoni; their disclosure does not establish the merits of that legal dispute or indicate a feud involving Swift. Associated Press report on the messages.

How to distinguish a feud from a rumor
- Look for a direct statement. A person’s attributed words are stronger evidence of what they said than fan interpretation of lyrics or online activity.
- Separate the event from the explanation. An award-show joke is documented as an event; interpreting it as proof of animosity requires evidence beyond the joke itself.
- Check who is making the claim. Reporting that describes theories as speculation is not confirmation by the people named.
- Keep the date attached. Rodrigo’s comment was reported in 2023; it should not be presented as a statement about later events.
- Do not treat silence as proof. A lack of public interaction does not, on its own, establish a private falling-out.
