Taylor Swift released The Life of a Showgirl on October 3, 2025, without putting a song out as a pre-release single. “The Fate of Ophelia,” the album’s opening track, arrived with the album; its music video premiered three days later. The accurate description is an album-first rollout—not an album with no singles at all.
What “skipping the singles format” means
The original campaign did not use an advance single to introduce the album before release day. The Atlantic described the campaign as having no singles preceding the album. That is a statement about sequencing: it does not mean the album received no single-oriented promotion after release, or that there were no later singles.
The Associated Press reported that The Life of a Showgirl was Swift’s 12th studio album. It was announced in August 2025 and released October 3, with 12 tracks, production credited to Swift, Max Martin and Shellback, and Sabrina Carpenter featured on the title track.
Where “The Fate of Ophelia” fit in the timeline
- October 3, 2025: The album became available, with “The Fate of Ophelia” as its opening track, according to the Associated Press.
- October 6, 2025: Universal Music Japan reported that the song’s music video premiered. The song itself had therefore arrived as part of the album, not as an advance release.
In its release-week recap, Universal Music Japan also said all 12 tracks occupied the top 12 positions on Spotify’s Global Chart. That is the label’s account of the chart result.

What the launch figures show—and what they do not
The album’s release without an advance single coincided with major reported milestones, but those figures do not establish that the rollout format caused them.
- Spotify: Spotify reported more than 6 million pre-saves and said the album became its most-streamed album in a single day in 2025 in less than 11 hours. These are Spotify-specific measures and records.
- United Kingdom: Official Charts reported 423,000 chart units for the album’s No. 1 debut on the UK Official Albums Chart, and 642,000 combined UK chart units in 2025. These are UK chart figures, not global sales totals.
Pre-saves, streams and chart units describe different kinds of activity. None of these reported totals isolates the effect of releasing—or not releasing—a song before the album. A controlled comparison showing that an album-first rollout produced these outcomes is not established by the cited figures.

Did Swift explain why she chose an album-first release?
The cited sources do not provide a direct statement from Swift explaining why she chose not to release an advance single for this album. Assigning a particular motive—such as wanting listeners to hear the project as a whole—would go beyond the available evidence.
In a 2019 Music Week interview quoted by Official Charts, Swift discussed release plans generally: “We all do it differently, which is cool.” She also said, “We’re not just supposed to make art and hand it to a team that masterminds it.” Those remarks offer broader context about artists and release strategies, but they were not comments about The Life of a Showgirl.

The original rollout is not the album’s entire release history
The no-advance-single description applies to the original 2025 campaign. In September 2026, Official Charts reported that The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore was an expanded edition with four new songs, released almost a year after the original album. Later singles and an expanded edition make it important to distinguish the first release sequence from what followed.
