Sérgio Mendes, the Brazilian pianist, composer, arranger, singer and producer who carried bossa nova and samba-jazz to international pop audiences, died in Los Angeles on September 5, 2024, aged 83. His family said his health had been challenged by long-term COVID; his publicist, Karen Vock, told CBS he had battled its effects for months. The family’s statement did not establish a definitive medical cause of death. CBS/AP reported the announcement and publicist’s account.
Who was Sérgio Mendes?
Mendes was a Brazilian musician whose work connected the early bossa nova and samba-jazz scenes with listeners around the world. He was already part of Brazil’s emerging bossa nova movement before moving to the United States in 1964 and forming Brasil ’66. Across a career spanning six decades, he moved between Brazilian popular music, jazz-inflected arrangements, pop and collaborations with artists from different generations.
Brazil’s National Arts Foundation, Funarte, places him among musicians involved in both the birth of bossa nova and later renewals in Brazilian popular music. Its 2024 tribute records 35 albums over 60 years and 14 songs in the US Top 100. Funarte’s tribute also identifies his Grammy-recognized album Brasileiro and his Oscar nomination for “Real in Rio.”
How Mendes moved from Brazil’s jazz scene to Brasil ’66
Early bossa nova and samba-jazz
Mendes released his first album, Dance Moderno, in 1961. He took part in the landmark 1962 Carnegie Hall bossa nova concert and recorded with the Bossa Rio Sextet on Você Ainda não Ouviu Nada in 1963. These early projects place him within Brazil’s active jazz and bossa nova scene, not simply as a later pop interpreter. Funarte’s career summary documents this early chronology.

The move to the United States and a new vocal sound
After moving to the United States in 1964, Mendes formed Brasil ’66, adding two American female vocalists to a Brazilian-led ensemble. The group’s vocal-led arrangements made Brazilian rhythms and melodies legible to a broad English-speaking pop audience without erasing their Brazilian character. Herb Alpert produced the group’s first album, which included “Mas Que Nada.” The official Sérgio Mendes timeline traces the group’s formation and recordings.
What was Sérgio Mendes best known for?
His signature international success was “Mas Que Nada,” written by Jorge Ben and recorded by Brasil ’66. Mendes helped make the song a defining bossa-pop crossover. In 2006, he revisited it with the Black Eyed Peas, bringing the tune to listeners who may not have known its earlier recording. The Los Angeles Times obituary discusses the song and its later revival.

The success should not reduce Mendes to a cover singer or “Mas Que Nada” alone. He built a broad catalog, working with artists including will.i.am, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake, John Legend and Carlinhos Brown. The collaborations connected Brazilian music with changing international pop sounds while his projects continued to draw on samba, bossa nova and Brazilian popular music. His official timeline and the Los Angeles Times document these later phases.

His legacy in Brazil and beyond
Mendes’s achievement was not simply taking one Brazilian song abroad. His piano, arranging and production helped create a durable meeting point between Brazilian musical traditions and global popular music. Funarte president Maria Marighella described him as “um dos músicos brasileiros que, com o seu piano, colocou o samba-jazz e a nossa música no imaginário mundial”—a translation is “one of the Brazilian musicians who, with his piano, placed samba-jazz and our music in the world’s imagination.”
