Tami Roman has said she was diagnosed with body dysmorphia later in life and described using laxatives, starvation, and vomiting in pursuit of thinness. Her account, reported in a 2021 Los Angeles Times profile, gives important context to public interest in her weight loss—but it does not establish her current health or make weight loss evidence of wellness. Basketball Wives is part of that story too: Roman joined the series in 2010, and the show introduced her to a new generation of viewers.
What Tami Roman has said about body dysmorphia
In a 2021 interview and profile, Roman told the Los Angeles Times: “Body dysmorphia is something I was diagnosed with later on in life.” She said that before she understood she had a disorder, she abused laxatives, starved herself, and vomited food. These are her reported experiences, not an independent assessment of her present mental or physical health. Read the Los Angeles Times profile.
Roman also described a gap between how she sees herself and how other people may see her. “Every day is a challenge for me to get up and go, ‘I love everything about myself,’” she said in the same profile. The statement places self-acceptance at the center of her account; it is more informative than trying to judge her health from photographs or comments about her appearance.
ESSENCE reported in 2022 on Roman’s account of a decades-long struggle and her disclosure of laxative abuse, not eating, and vomiting in pursuit of thinness. That coverage corroborates her description of past behavior, while the details remain her own account. Read ESSENCE’s coverage.

What reports about her weight loss do—and do not—show
The 2021 Los Angeles Times profile noted that Roman’s weight loss had prompted concern from fans on social media at that time. That is a dated report of public reaction, not a medical finding. It does not establish her current weight, whether she has lost weight since then, or how she is doing now.
Roman’s disclosures make it especially important not to treat thinness as proof of health or to speculate about her condition from appearance. The reporting supports describing what she has said about her past; it does not support diagnosing her, assigning motives, or claiming a present-day health status.

How Basketball Wives fits into Roman’s story
Roman joined Basketball Wives in 2010. The Los Angeles Times says the series provided steady work and introduced her to a new generation of viewers. Its profile connects her disclosures about body image with a broader account of her career and earlier reality-television history, rather than presenting weight loss as a separate spectacle.
In a July 22, 2022 episode of Reality with The King, Roman discussed her career, Basketball Wives, and her struggle with body dysmorphia, according to the episode listing on Apple Podcasts. View the episode listing.
