Why did the Shakti win matter to Hussain’s career?
Hussain was a tabla virtuoso whose work crossed Indian classical music and other musical settings. Shakti, formed with guitarist John McLaughlin in 1973, was one of the groups central to that wider musical career. The Associated Press obituary describes Hussain’s six-decade career and his musical lineage: his father was tabla artist Alla Rakha. Hussain died in December 2024 at age 73, as reported in the Associated Press obituary.
