Did Kendrick Lamar perform “Not Like Us” at the Super Bowl?

“Not Like Us” is a diss track directed at Drake. NPR reported that the lyrics make an accusation against him and that, before the game, Drake’s attorneys had filed a defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group, the parent company of both artists’ labels. Those are allegations in a song and a reported legal dispute, not facts established by the lyrics. The cited contemporaneous coverage does not establish the lawsuit’s later procedural outcome. NPR’s coverage discusses that context.

Who appeared with Lamar, and what did the show look like?
SZA joined Lamar for “luther” and “All the Stars.” Actor Samuel L. Jackson introduced Lamar as Uncle Sam, and Serena Williams appeared during “Not Like Us.” Producer and DJ Mustard also appeared, according to AP’s live report.

AP reported that Lamar appeared atop a Buick Grand National Experimental, a visual reference to the title and cover imagery associated with GNX. Dancers wore red, white and blue. The performance continued after a person carrying what appeared to be a combination of Sudanese and Palestinian flags interrupted on the field; AP’s account does not establish that person’s intent.
What can be said about the internet’s reaction?
The reporting supports a specific conclusion: whether Lamar would perform “Not Like Us” was a prominent question, and he ultimately did. AP documented the tease and performance, while NPR described the song’s dispute with Drake. These sources provide event reporting and cultural context, not a representative survey of social media or a cross-platform measure of positive and negative sentiment.

That distinction matters because reactions to the musical staging, the setlist and the Drake feud are different kinds of responses. A selected post or a critic’s interpretation can illustrate one view, but it cannot stand in for “the internet.” The available evidence does not show that viewers reacted uniformly or establish how many approved or objected.
How many people watched the halftime show?
Guinness World Records reports 133.5 million television viewers for Lamar’s February 9, 2025 performance, counting the audience across FOX Sports, Tubi and NFL+. Guinness says that surpassed the 133.4 million viewers it attributes to Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl performance. These are figures reported by Guinness World Records, not a separate audience analysis in the coverage cited here.

When and where was the show?
Lamar headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. The NFL announced the booking on September 8, 2024, and said the show would air on FOX. In that announcement, Lamar said, “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why.” The NFL announcement also quoted NFL head of music Seth Dudowsky praising Lamar’s influence and ability to create moments that resonate.
