Yes—by January 7, 2026, Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid had edged past Black Phone 2 at the North American box office, with reported grosses of $77.5 million and $77.3 million, respectively. Did it pass the horror sequel worldwide too?
Not in the next dated worldwide comparison. Domestic and worldwide totals are different measures, and the two reports were published on different dates, so they should not be combined into one ranking. Koimoi’s worldwide comparison.
How much had each film earned, and when?
| Film | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| The Housemaid | More than $75 million domestic; $133 million worldwide | Associated Press figures after 17 days in release, reported January 6, 2026 |
| Black Phone 2 | Estimated $26.5 million in North America; $42 million worldwide | Opening figures reported by the Associated Press on October 19, 2025 |
The figures above describe different points in each film’s run, not a like-for-like final-gross comparison. The AP’s January 6 account also cited a reported $35 million production cost for The Housemaid; that is a production-budget figure, not a measure of studio profit or break-even performance. Associated Press on The Housemaid; Associated Press on Black Phone 2.

The Associated Press reported that Lionsgate announced a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, based on the second book in Freida McFadden’s trilogy. The studio aimed for director Paul Feig and Sweeney to return, and Rebecca Sonnenshine was writing the sequel, according to AP. That announcement concerns the follow-up; it does not by itself establish the source novel for the first film.
