Suzanne Collins’s fifth Hunger Games novel, Sunrise on the Reaping, was published on March 18, 2025. It follows Haymitch Abernathy on the morning of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, 24 years before the events of the first novel. A film adaptation is scheduled to begin its North American theatrical release on November 20, 2026.
What Sunrise on the Reaping is about
The novel returns to Panem 24 years before The Hunger Games. Its story begins on the morning of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Haymitch Abernathy is selected in District 12 and taken to the Capitol alongside the district’s three other tributes. Scholastic’s announcement identifies it as the fifth book in the series.
What Collins said inspired the story
In the publisher’s June 6, 2024 announcement, Collins said she was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission, including “the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.” She also cited propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative, and said the question “Real or not real?” felt increasingly pressing to her. These are the inspirations Collins named, not an exhaustive account of the novel’s themes. Read the announcement.
