Why are viewers divided over the ending?
It revises a familiar origin story
Many versions of Superman’s story present Jor-El and Lara as benevolent figures whose hopes for their son align with his heroism. Gunn’s film instead makes their message troubling, so Clark’s choice to reject it becomes central to his arc. It presents a more vulnerable Superman
Some disagreements reflect broader expectations of who Superman should be, including whether he ought to feel almost godlike. Gunn has said that “I don’t think our Superman is a god,” and described a character with physical vulnerability. That approach fits a story in which moral strength comes from how Clark responds to uncertainty, rather than from being an invulnerable figure whose path is already settled. What do the post-credit scenes mean?
The scenes show Superman and Krypto looking at Earth from the Moon, followed by a light moment with Mister Terrific as they look at damage in Metropolis. They offer character beats rather than a tease of a new character or plotline. The National reported that some fans were torn over the lack of a future-story setup. Does Superman reject his Kryptonian parents?
He rejects the mission their message appears to assign him; the ending does not show him repudiating his heritage in every sense.
