Its images balanced Superman’s vulnerability and rescues with Krypto, the Daily Planet, Lex Luthor, and the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane. The film’s later opening gave that relaunch commercial weight, but it does not prove that superhero films as a whole entered a new era.
What did the Superman trailer reveal?
DC’s official scene-by-scene account of the teaser describes a broad introduction to the film’s world: Clark Kent and the Daily Planet, Krypto rescuing an injured Superman, rescue scenes, an angry crowd, Lex Luthor and other DC characters, and quieter moments between Lois and Clark. That mix suggested a story interested in Superman’s place among ordinary people as well as in the larger cast around him. The studio’s account identifies what appears in the trailer; its interpretation of those images should not be mistaken for confirmation of plot details.
The emotional emphasis fits DC’s official description of the character, which foregrounds compassion and belief in human goodness. At the trailer premiere, Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane, described the pair’s bond this way: “What I love about their relationship, through every iteration of the comic books, films and television series, is that they’re soul mates.” DC’s film page and its teaser breakdown provide the studio’s framing and scene details.
Why the teaser mattered to DC Studios
Superman was DC Studios’ first feature film to reach theaters. James Gunn wrote and directed it, with David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Warner Bros. Pictures planned an international rollout beginning July 9, 2025, followed by U.S. theaters and IMAX on July 11. That made the trailer a public introduction to the reorganized studio’s theatrical direction, not just another entry in a long-running character franchise. The release plan and credits are listed on DC’s official film page.

Warner Bros. Discovery later stated in its Q2 2025 shareholder letter: “Superman marked the beginning of a new era for DC Studios, extending our strong creative momentum into the third quarter.” That is direct evidence of how the company positioned the film: as the start of a new period for DC Studios. It is not independent evidence that the superhero genre changed as a whole. The shareholder letter also reported the film’s global opening revenue.
What the opening numbers show
The film’s box office offers evidence about the launch, but the figures measure different markets and formats. They should not be added together: the IMAX results are a subset of the overall theatrical opening, while the domestic and worldwide totals cover different territories.

| Measure | Reported result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide opening | $220 million, reported by Warner Bros. Discovery in its 2025 Q2 shareholder letter | A large global launch, as reported by the studio |
| U.S. and Canada opening | An estimated $122 million, reported by the Associated Press in 2025 | Domestic performance; AP compared it with earlier Superman-related releases |
| IMAX global opening | $30.4 million, reported by IMAX Corporation in 2025 | Revenue in one premium exhibition format, not a separate measure of total audience demand |
| IMAX North American opening | $19.1 million, which IMAX said was 15.6% of domestic opening revenue | The format’s share of the North American opening, according to IMAX |
The Associated Press put the estimated U.S. and Canadian opening below Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s $166 million domestic launch in 2016, but above Man of Steel’s $116 million in 2013. Those comparisons are not adjusted for inflation, so they offer historical scale rather than a like-for-like measure of audience demand. AP also described the 2025 film as the first release fully steered by DC Studios co-heads Gunn and Peter Safran. The Associated Press report provides the domestic estimate and comparisons.
IMAX said the film was shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras and included scenes in an IMAX-exclusive expanded aspect ratio. Those production and exhibition details help explain the format’s reported opening revenue; they do not measure the trailer’s influence. IMAX’s announcement is the source for its format-specific figures and claims.

Does it mark a new era for superhero films?
The strongest supported conclusion is narrower: Superman marked a significant beginning for DC Studios’ theatrical slate. Its status as the studio’s first theatrical feature, the company’s explicit “new era” language, and the scale of its opening all support a DC relaunch story.
The wider claim about superhero films is not established by this evidence. One film’s trailer and opening cannot show that the genre entered a new period, and the available figures do not establish how much the teaser itself changed audience interest. No verified trailer-view count or independent measure of its effect on superhero cinema is available here. The teaser is best understood as a confident statement of DC Studios’ intended direction—one built around Superman’s compassion, a wide ensemble, and a central Lois-and-Clark relationship—rather than proof of a genre-wide turning point.
