Stephen Colbert’s verdict on President Donald Trump’s February 24, 2026 State of the Union was that its official self-praise sounded unconvincing. “Though if you have to say you’re strong, prosperous, and respected it kind of feels like you’re not,” he joked, according to the Boston Globe’s February 25 report.
What was Colbert’s verdict?
Colbert aimed his punchline at the administration’s announced theme for the address: “America at 250: Strong, Prosperous, and Respected.” As the Boston Globe reported, he said: “Though if you have to say you’re strong, prosperous, and respected it kind of feels like you’re not.” The joke questioned the need to announce those qualities as evidence of them.
Before the punchline, Colbert described settling in to watch the speech: “dropped an edible and strapped in.” That is a quoted fragment, not a complete sentence.
What was the speech’s theme and context?
Trump delivered the State of the Union on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The Associated Press published a transcript the following day, which establishes the date and provides the text of Trump’s address; it is not a transcript of Colbert’s comments.

The official Paramount Press Express listing identifies Colbert’s response as a live monologue following the address. Its description says the segment addressed Trump’s treatment of Democrats and his food-stamp policy claims, and characterizes the speech as record-setting. The Boston Globe describes the address as 108 minutes and calls it the longest-ever address of its kind; that duration and characterization are the Globe’s account.
