Jane Goodall’s legacy is carried forward through community-led forest restoration; Leonardo DiCaprio’s documented contribution is chiefly grantmaking and public advocacy; and Harrison Ford’s established role is institutional leadership at Conservation International. The evidence is specific in different ways—and does not show that all three personally carry out forest work.
What counts as “saving forests”?
Public figures can support forests through very different routes: leading or backing conservation organizations, directing grants, using media to build public attention, or supporting restoration carried out with local communities. Those roles are not interchangeable. An affiliation alone does not establish a person’s hands-on work or measurable forest impact.
The three examples below are illustrative, not a definitive ranking or a complete list of celebrities involved in conservation. The available institutional sources document distinct kinds of engagement, with the strongest operational detail coming from the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI).
Jane Goodall: a restoration legacy continued by JGI
Jane Goodall died in 2025. The Jane Goodall Institute describes her as “Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE (1934-2025)” and says it continues her vision. Its current work should be attributed to the institute, rather than described as Goodall’s personal activity today.

JGI identifies forest restoration and community-led conservation as priorities. Its forest-restoration work includes agroforestry, monitoring tree plantings, and local forest monitoring—approaches that connect habitat recovery with community participation. In the institute’s words, “community-led” conservation is central to this work; its Forest Restoration page explains the approach.
JGI’s homepage reports “9M+ acres of chimpanzee habitat protected and managed by JGI USA-led efforts,” citing the Jane Goodall Institute USA 2024 Annual Report. This is a reported chimpanzee-habitat figure for USA-led efforts, not a global total of forest acreage. JGI’s homepage provides the figure and attribution.
“I think more and more people know today the role that forests play in slowing down climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it. And people are beginning to understand what we call the services provided by the forests; they give us clean air and water, they provide food and clothing, and so much else. They provide livelihoods to the hundreds of thousands of Indigenous people and others who depend on them for their very livelihoods.”
— Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, quoted by the Jane Goodall Institute on its Forest Restoration page

Leonardo DiCaprio: grants, campaigns and public communication
The United Nations says DiCaprio established his foundation in 1998. It used grants, public campaigns, and media projects to bring attention and funding to biodiversity, including forest conservation. This is evidence of a funding and advocacy model, not proof that DiCaprio personally undertook forest restoration.
The UN profile also says the foundation supported over 35 conservation projects. That count covers conservation broadly; it is not a tally of forest projects. The United Nations profile describes the foundation’s work, while WWF’s profile also records its 1998 founding and DiCaprio’s environmental engagement.
Rank #4
Harrison Ford: a conservation leadership role, not a documented forest project
Conservation International identifies Ford as its board vice chairman. That is a documented institutional conservation role, but the organization’s retrieved page does not name a specific forest project led by Ford or quantify an outcome attributable to him. It would go beyond the evidence to present his board position as proof of hands-on forest restoration. See Conservation International.
How their contributions differ
| Person or organization | Documented mechanism | What the evidence establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jane Goodall and JGI | Goodall’s legacy; JGI programs in forest restoration and community-led conservation | JGI describes agroforestry, monitoring tree plantings, and local forest monitoring. JGI’s homepage reports 9M+ acres of chimpanzee habitat protected and managed by JGI USA-led efforts, citing its 2024 annual report. | The 9M+ figure is not a global forest-area total, and JGI’s current programs should not be attributed to Goodall as personal current work. |
| Leonardo DiCaprio | Foundation grantmaking, public campaigns, and media projects | The UN says the foundation supported attention and funding for biodiversity, including forest conservation, and over 35 conservation projects. | The project count is not forest-specific; these sources do not establish personal field restoration by DiCaprio. |
| Harrison Ford | Organizational leadership | Conservation International identifies him as board vice chairman. | The cited page specifies no forest project or measurable forest outcome attributable to him. |
What readers can take from these examples
“Passionate about saving forests” can describe a motivation, but it does not tell readers what someone actually does. In these documented cases, the distinctions matter: JGI describes restoration work and a habitat figure with a defined scope; DiCaprio’s foundation used funding and public communication; and Ford’s cited evidence establishes a board role, not a particular forest intervention. Readers interested in practical conservation can explore JGI’s account of its forest-restoration work.
