CJ7 is a 2008 science-fiction comedy about a poor father, his young son and the odd alien-like pet that upends their lives. Directed by Stephen Chow, who also plays the father, Ti, the film turns a child’s wish for a coveted toy into a warm, chaotic father-and-son story.
What is CJ7 about?
Ti works construction and struggles to give his son, Dicky, the advantages enjoyed by wealthier children at his elite private school. When Ti cannot afford the toy Dicky wants, he searches a junkyard and brings home a mysterious orb instead. Dicky discovers that it is an extraordinary, extraterrestrial-looking pet. The creature’s powers make it an unpredictable companion—and a source of comic disruption when Dicky takes it to class.

The fantasy premise rests on the gap between what Dicky hopes his father can provide and what Ti can manage. The strange pet does not simply stand in for the expensive toy; its unexpected behavior brings trouble and wonder into the everyday pressures of school and family life. Sony Pictures Classics’ press notes describe the setup, while Sony Pictures Japan’s official synopsis likewise presents Ti and Dicky as a very poor father and son whose found extraterrestrial proves unexpectedly unhelpful.
Who made the film?
Stephen Chow directed CJ7 and plays Ti. Sony Pictures Japan dates the film to 2008, and the Métropole Films listing records a North American theatrical release on March 21, 2008.

Sony Pictures Japan’s catalog documents Japanese DVD and Blu-ray releases. Its DVD entry lists a November 26, 2008 release, Mandarin original audio, Japanese dubbing, and Japanese and English subtitles. Those specifications describe that Japanese cataloged DVD; they should not be assumed to apply to every country’s copy. The entry confirms a release, not current retail stock.
Runtime varies across listings, and the sources do not explain why:

The Japanese studio catalog confirms that both formats were released, but it does not establish what is currently available to buy in another country. Before choosing a copy, check the seller’s specific edition rather than relying on the film title alone:
