But the deal that later became famous was not simply a budget negotiation: George Lucas accepted lower immediate writing and directing fees while securing merchandising and sequel rights. The Los Angeles Times credits his longtime attorney Tom Pollock—not an agent—as the negotiator of the Fox agreement.
How much did the original Star Wars cost?
Published accounts give several figures, and they describe different points in the film’s financing and production. They should not be treated as interchangeable:
| Figure | What it describes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| $18 million | Lucas and producer Gary Kurtz’s original budget, as reported by Biography.com | Biography.com; publication year not stated on the opened page |
| $7.5 million | Fox’s offer, as reported by Biography.com | Biography.com; publication year not stated on the opened page |
| About $10 million | Fox financing, in the Los Angeles Times account | Los Angeles Times, 1997 |
| $11 million | Final budget, as reported by Biography.com | Biography.com; publication year not stated on the opened page |
The accounts do not fully reconcile their figures. The most useful concise description is a final budget of about $11 million, while keeping the earlier proposed budget, Fox offer, and financing amount separate.
What did Lucas negotiate with Fox?
According to the Los Angeles Times’ 1997 account, Lucas’s longtime attorney Tom Pollock negotiated the agreement. After American Graffiti, Lucas could have received $500,000 to write or direct, Pollock said. Instead, Lucas took $50,000 to write Star Wars and $50,000 to direct it.

The trade-off was not just a lower fee for a chance at a future payday. The agreement also included profit participation, merchandising rights, and sequel rights, with conditions attached to some of those rights.
Immediate compensation and merchandising
The Times reported that Fox and Lucas initially split merchandising revenue 60–40, with Fox’s share diminishing over two years until the rights reverted to Lucas. Alan Ladd Jr., Fox’s head of production at the time, later said: “We would have paid George much more, because he was worth it. But he was very smart in asking for the merchandise rights instead.”

Sequel rights and distribution
The account also says Lucas secured sequel rights, but he had to finance sequels himself and offer them to Fox for distribution first. That structure gave Lucas meaningful control without removing Fox from the arrangement.
Did Lucas’s agent get him the deal?
The detailed account of the Fox agreement identifies Pollock as Lucas’s attorney and the negotiator; it does not establish that an agent negotiated the deal. It is more accurate to say that Lucas’s legal representation helped shape an agreement that addressed long-term rights as well as immediate compensation.

The distinction matters because “a good agent” can become shorthand for any representative who helps a creator negotiate. In this case, the documented role belongs to an attorney. The broader lesson is about evaluating the full package—fees, participation, rights, financing obligations, and distribution terms—not assigning the result to the wrong professional.
Why control mattered—and why the outcome was uncertain
Lucas later connected his interest in sequel control to the difficulty of getting another film made without a major hit. In a 2020 interview with StarWars.com, he recalled: “I took control of the movie so I could make all three of them because I knew, unless you have a really big hit with a movie it’s impossible to really get another one made. Especially in those days.”

He also recalled Fox ending production before the opening sequence had been shot: “The studio on A New Hope, they just cut us off.” That is Lucas’s retrospective account, not a contract record, but it helps explain why maintaining room to make sequels mattered to him.
Fox’s expectations were not uniform. A Lucasfilm retrospective describes a November 1976 memo from Peter S. Myers, Fox’s vice president of domestic distribution, who backed the film as a summer tent-pole event while acknowledging skepticism among board members and some executives. The account does not support the claim that the studio as a whole expected failure.

Nor does it support a story in which Lucas or Pollock could reliably foresee the franchise’s success. The Times reported that Pollock and others said the eventual scale of Star Wars and its merchandising impact could not have been predicted. If the movie had failed, Fox’s agreement might have looked like the wiser deal. The enduring point is not that the rights were a guaranteed jackpot, but that they were negotiated as contingent value under uncertainty.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the budget story teaches creators
- Separate the headline fee from the whole agreement. Lucas’s writing and directing fees were only part of his compensation.
- Define rights precisely. Merchandising and sequel rights can have distinct splits, time limits, financing duties, and distribution conditions.
- Identify who is doing what. In this documented deal, the negotiator was an attorney, not an agent.
- Do not confuse a favorable outcome with a predictable one. Rights can become valuable later, but their value may depend on success nobody can guarantee.
The surviving public accounts cited here are retrospective reporting and recollections; they do not provide the complete contract or production ledger. They support a careful account of the deal’s broad terms, not a definitive reconstruction of every clause.
