Star Trek: Lower Decks Ended Exactly As It Should

Lower Decks gives Freeman, Ransom, Mariner, and Boimler new roles while keeping the Cerritos crew’s bond intact—a fitting end to this chapter, not a confirmed end to every possible adventure.

Star Trek: Lower Decks ends with its crew changing jobs, not leaving one another behind. Carol Freeman takes a new command at Starbase 80, Jack Ransom becomes captain of the Cerritos, and Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler become co-provisional first officers. That mix of earned advancement and an intact crew-family bond makes the finale feel like a satisfying end to this chapter—even as it leaves the door open to more adventures.

How Lower Decks ends

Spoilers for the series finale.

The fifth season finale gives the central characters new roles rather than a clean break from the ship and crew that shaped them. Freeman chooses a post at Starbase 80. Ransom takes command of the Cerritos, then selects Mariner and Boimler as co-provisional first officers.

Those decisions move the ensemble forward on several fronts: Freeman gets a new command, Ransom steps into the captain’s chair, and Mariner and Boimler share a leadership role. The changes are specific to those characters; they are not a wholesale reset of the crew.

Why the changes feel earned

Freeman gets a new chapter of her own

Freeman’s move is more than a transfer. The showrunner, Mike McMahan, said he wanted to “shake stuff up a little bit” and create new story opportunities after Freeman’s relationship with her daughter had reached a steadier place. The choice also gives the audience a chance to see Freeman’s command abilities in a different setting.

Dawnn Lewis, who voices Freeman, described the shift through the lens of a parent whose child needs less day-to-day direction: “It’s like when you become an empty nester and you now start to feel like, ‘Now that I’m not there, it’s not like you’re not available to them, but it’s what do I do with the rest of my life?’” It is an apt emotional frame for a character whose identity has long been closely tied to leading the Cerritos and raising Mariner.

Starbase 80 also carries a humane implication. Tawny Newsome, Mariner’s performer, discussed it as a place for second chances and for people who need more support. That makes Freeman’s choice feel less like abandoning her old crew and more like taking her experience somewhere it can matter in a different way.

Ransom and the two provisional first officers

Ransom’s promotion changes the chain of command without removing the familiar relationships aboard the ship. His decision to put Mariner and Boimler together as co-provisional first officers gives both a real step forward while preserving the contrast between their working styles. Newsome described the pair as different kinds of officers who complement one another.

The arrangement is also a fitting continuation of the series’ interest in the people who do the work below the captain’s level. Mariner and Boimler are no longer simply junior officers trying to prove themselves; they are entrusted with responsibility and still have room to grow into it.

Does the finale provide enough closure?

It offers emotional closure without pretending every future question has been settled. Mariner’s final speech affirms the crew’s bond and shared mission, so the relationships remain the story’s anchor even as people take on different duties. The characters can advance without the series discarding the ensemble dynamic that made their adventures work.

Newsome called the ending “a fitting end to this chapter of Lower Decks.” That wording captures the finale’s balance: it closes the series as released while leaving the characters’ wider futures imaginable. The original announcement that the fifth season would be the last also expressed hope that the crew might live on in new adventures; it was not confirmation of a revival or continuation.

Whether the ending is satisfying is ultimately a matter of taste. Its case for satisfaction rests on visible character movement, continuity in the crew’s relationships, and a final note that feels conclusive without insisting that the story world has no more room.

The season’s setup put the Cerritos crew on subspace-rift duty while the junior officers navigated crises and career ambitions. Paramount described the rifts as “space potholes.” The finale’s promotions and reassignment resolve the character arc without needing to turn that last episode into a permanent farewell to every possible adventure.
