Star Trek: Starfleet Academy opened with a sharp critic–audience split on Rotten Tomatoes: a January 16, 2026 report put critics at 85% positive and audience ratings at 35%. Those figures were an early snapshot, not permanent scores. When Rotten Tomatoes was accessed on October 8, 2026, its listing showed an 84% Tomatometer from 63 critic reviews and a 52% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 audience ratings.
How the Rotten Tomatoes scores changed
The difference between the launch-era figures and the later listing is substantial on the audience side, while the critic figure remained close. Each percentage describes a separate pool of reviews or ratings at a particular time; neither is a count of every viewer or a universal verdict on the series.

| Snapshot | Critics | Audience | What the figures represent |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 16, 2026, reported by Tom’s Guide | 85% positive | 35% positive | An early Rotten Tomatoes snapshot reported the day after the series premiere; counts were not stated in that report. |
| March 25, 2026, reported by Variety | 87% critical approval | Not stated | A separate critic-score snapshot reported by Variety; audience score and review count were not stated. |
| Rotten Tomatoes listing accessed October 8, 2026 | 84% Tomatometer from 63 reviews | 52% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 ratings | Live listing for the series/first season; scores and counts can change. |
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and Popcornmeter are distinct aggregates drawn from critics’ reviews and audience ratings, respectively. Comparing them can show a difference in the recorded reception, but it cannot establish why that difference exists. The percentages alone do not demonstrate review bombing or explain individual viewers’ reactions.
What critics and viewers were responding to
The official premise follows young cadets pursuing service in Starfleet amid friendships, rivalries, first loves, and a threat to the Academy and Federation. That cadet-centered coming-of-age focus places youthful relationships and humor alongside the franchise’s science-fiction setting.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the approach as a tonal change: “Injecting a heavy dose of hormones and humor into the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy marks a refreshing tonal shift that proves this franchise still has plenty of new thematic territory to explore.” By contrast, a Space.com review published on premiere day criticized the teen-drama approach and questioned its fit with franchise expectations. These are examples of different critical perspectives, not evidence that all critics or fans share either view.
