What Spotify Premium costs in Canada
MobileSyrup reported these Canadian monthly prices on May 12, 2026. It said the prices were already available to new customers, while existing subscribers would see them beginning with their July 2026 bill. Treat these as reported plan prices, not a guarantee of what any particular account will be charged; plan terms, billing dates and taxes can affect the amount due.

Billboard Canada described the increases for most major Premium plans as $1 to $3 per month. The two reports provide a useful overview, but neither settles every legacy-plan or payment-route variation. Check your own account for the price that applies to you.

Did taxes cause Spotify’s price increase?
That cause has not been established. The Canadian reporting says Spotify did not explain the specific trigger for the 2026 increase. Spotify’s general price-update page says the company updates Premium prices to continue innovating amid changing market conditions and deliver audio content worldwide; this is general context, not a Canada-specific explanation.
It is important to distinguish three amounts or events: Spotify’s base subscription price, tax applied under relevant rules, and the final total charged to an individual subscriber. Evidence that tax may be added to a subscription does not show that tax prompted Spotify to raise its base prices.

How Canadian sales tax can affect your bill
Spotify’s Canadian support page says local governments may require tax collection in some circumstances. When applicable, tax is included at the point of transaction, so the amount on a receipt can differ from the advertised plan rate. Spotify says a required change in tax collection is applied automatically to the account; payment history and receipts show what was charged.

The Canada Revenue Agency lists online subscription-based music streaming among supplies that can be taxable for specified Canadian recipients. It treats each monthly subscription period as a separate supply when determining the GST/HST rate as payment becomes due. The tax that applies depends on the relevant rules and the subscriber’s circumstances and location.

The Digital Services Tax is not the explanation
Canada’s Digital Services Tax should not be cited as the cause of this price change. The Government of Canada says the Digital Services Tax Act received Royal Assent for repeal on March 26, 2026, and that the 3% tax and related obligations no longer apply. That separate tax does not establish why Spotify changed Canadian subscription prices.

When the new price appeared and how to check your charge
MobileSyrup reported that existing subscribers would see the increased prices starting with their July 2026 bill. The exact billing date depends on the account. Spotify’s general guidance says it emails subscribers about price updates and provides a two-month grace period to cancel before a new price takes effect.
- Open your Spotify account page and confirm your plan and next billing date.
- Check the price and any tax shown in your payment history or receipt. Compare the plan charge with the final total rather than assuming they are the same.
- Review Spotify’s price-change email for the date and terms that apply to your account.

If you do not want to pay the new price
Spotify says you can cancel before your next billing date if you do not want the new price. Its Canadian support page also identifies the free, ad-supported service and other paid plans as alternatives. Check the account page for the cancellation and renewal details attached to your subscription.
