What Netflix’s premiere-week record means
Netflix reported 68 million views for Squid Game Season 2 in the week it premiered on December 26, 2024. The company described that as the most views for a show during its premiere week, surpassing the 50.1 million it reported for Wednesday Season 1 in 2022. These are Netflix’s reported “views,” not a verified count of unique people: the figure should not be restated as 68 million individual viewers. Netflix’s December report gives the launch figure and comparison in its Top 10 report for the week of Dec. 23, 2024.
The country statistic also refers to a particular chart window. Netflix said the season ranked No. 1 in 92 countries in its premiere-week report. That supports a broad claim about the title’s chart performance on Netflix, not a claim that it led every streaming service or was watched by everyone worldwide.
How the reported totals changed
Netflix published several later snapshots, each using a different reporting window. A weekly count, a cumulative total since premiere, and a half-year figure answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

The dated 126.2-million and 152.5-million figures appear in Netflix’s Dec. 30, 2024 and Jan. 6, 2025 weekly reports. The 87-million half-year figure comes from Netflix’s report on what subscribers watched in the second half of 2024. Country rankings shifted from week to week
Netflix’s January 7, 2025 report said Season 2 was in the Top 10 in 93 countries and No. 1 in 91 countries for the week reported. That differs from the premiere-week report’s No. 1 ranking in 92 countries because it describes a later week, not a correction to the debut figure. Season 2’s story and scale
The season follows Gi-hun three years after he won the first game. He returns with a new resolution and enters another life-or-death contest alongside new participants competing for 45.6 billion won, according to Netflix’s official synopsis. Hwang Dong-hyuk created, wrote, and directed the series. The season has seven episodes, all streaming as of Netflix’s June 2025 update.
Netflix also documented Season 2 fan activations, including a themed store at Lucca Comics & Games and a Warsaw event featuring Puma tracksuits and posters among its prizes. Those event details do not establish that any particular tracksuit or poster is an officially licensed product currently available from a retailer. How to compare the record with other Netflix releases
A fair comparison needs the same measure and time window. Premiere-week views can be compared with another show’s premiere-week views; a cumulative total should be matched to another cumulative total at the same elapsed point. Country rankings need the same weekly chart window, and all-time list positions need to retain the date Netflix reported them. Netflix’s figures document its own audience measurement and charts; the totals cited here have not been independently verified.
