Denzel Washington stars as a music mogul caught in a ransom plot that forces a life-or-death choice. The film’s official trailer is listed on Apple’s film page.
What does the trailer introduce?
A24 describes Washington’s character as a powerful music mogul with a reputation for having the “best ears in the business.” A ransom plot targets him and turns his position and judgment into the center of a life-or-death moral dilemma. Those phrases come from A24’s promotional synopsis, rather than an independent assessment of the character.

The trailer-led premise makes the film a crime thriller about more than a kidnapping: it places a wealthy figure under pressure to decide what he is willing to risk when a ransom demand becomes personal. The official synopsis establishes that dilemma, though it does not provide enough detail to claim how every plot beat unfolds.
Why is it called Kurosawa-inspired?
Lee’s film relocates and reinterprets High and Low, Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller starring Toshiro Mifune. The Associated Press reports that Kurosawa’s film was itself adapted from Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom. The adaptation lineage is therefore King’s Ransom to Kurosawa’s film, then a contemporary New York reinterpretation by Lee—not a claim that Lee’s film is a direct adaptation of the novel.
#1 Best Overall
The clearest established point of comparison is the changed setting: the new film places its story in modern-day New York, while Kurosawa’s film belongs to its own earlier setting and period. Lee’s version centers on a music mogul, giving the premise a contemporary cultural and professional context. The official descriptions support those broad contrasts; they do not establish a scene-by-scene comparison or specific changes to every plot detail.
When was it released?
Apple and A24 announced a theatrical premiere on August 15, 2025, followed by global streaming on Apple TV+ beginning September 5, 2025. Those dates are past; they describe the announced release schedule, not upcoming release dates.
