A fan theory reads them instead as boat propellers distorted by water, but that interpretation has not been confirmed by the show’s creator or a production source cited here.
What did SpongeBob’s creator say the shapes were inspired by?
In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, creator Stephen Hillenburg said: “I put flowers in the sky because I had just been to Tahiti”. The interview connects that trip to the flower shapes and notes that Hawaii inspired other tropical details, including tiki imagery and SpongeBob’s pineapple home.
That is the clearest documented explanation for the motif: it began as a design choice drawing on Hillenburg’s travels, not as an established piece of underwater machinery.
How did the background designer describe them?
A season reference attributes a further explanation to series background designer Kenny Pittenger: “They function as clouds in a way, but since the show takes place underwater, they aren’t really clouds.” The passage says the shapes are a whimsical design element meant to evoke a flower-print Hawaiian shirt, and quotes Pittenger adding, “I don’t know what they are either.” The account appears in the Wikipedia article on season 1, which cites an underlying interview; it is therefore a secondary-source quotation rather than a directly reviewed interview here.

Why do some fans think they are boat propellers?
A fan theory proposes that the shapes are propellers seen through water. Its proponents point to their blade-like appearance, which can look like three to five blades, and to an alleged lack of flowers in a prehistoric scene. These are observations interpreted by fans, not confirmation of a literal mechanism or an official explanation.
The theory is memorable because it turns an abstract background motif into an in-world object. But a resemblance is not enough to establish what the animation depicts, and an apparent continuity difference in one scene does not by itself settle the meaning of a recurring design.

Do scenes where the shapes move prove the theory?
A 2021 NickALive!/CBR article summarizes scenes in which flower shapes seem to fall or interact with characters, including “Karen’s Virus” and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Such moments can prompt closer viewing, but the article does not establish that the shapes are propellers; it explicitly presents that explanation as unconfirmed.
Animation can use a familiar background element flexibly for a visual gag. Without a creator or production source identifying the object as a propeller, those scenes remain material for interpretation rather than proof of the theory.

The flower-inspired design account has the stronger documentary support. That does not make every in-universe interpretation impossible: the creator’s real-world inspiration and a viewer’s reading of particular scenes can coexist. What the available accounts do not establish is that the show intended the recurring shapes to be boat propellers.

For a useful rewatch, separate what is plainly visible from what a theory infers. Notice whether a shape moves, how the scene uses it, and whether the episode itself identifies it. Early episodes are a natural place to follow how the background motif works; the season 1 reference discusses the motif’s introduction and season releases.
