Peter Parker’s Canon Girlfriends and Romantic Interests, in Chronological Order

Peter Parker’s comic-book romances span early crushes, a college girlfriend, a long-term partnership and marriage, and an on-and-off romance. Here’s the Earth-616 chronology, with each relationship’s status made clear.

In Peter Parker’s main Earth-616 comics continuity, the broad order of his major romantic interests runs from Betty Brant and Liz Allan to Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, Felicia Hardy (Black Cat), and—less precisely placed in the available retrospective—Debra Whitman. They do not all qualify as girlfriends in the same sense: this timeline distinguishes early crushes and flirtation from dating, an on-and-off romance, and a long-term partnership.

“Canon” here means the principal Earth-616 comic-book history, not alternate-universe versions or event stories such as House of M. Marvel’s own retrospective accounts are selective rather than an exhaustive register of every date, flirtation, or later continuity development, so “all” is best read as the major relationships and romantic interests documented in those accounts.

Peter Parker’s romantic relationships, in chronological order

  1. Betty Brant — early love interest

Before Peter met Mary Jane, he had fallen in love with Betty Brant, a secretary at the Daily Bugle. Marvel describes this as an early love, but Betty’s place in Peter’s story changes over time; it is misleading to treat every later interaction as one continuous dating relationship. Marvel’s Peter Parker love-interests retrospective and its Peter Parker reading guide revisit the question of how that early crush might develop.

  2. Liz Allan — school-era flirtation

Liz, Peter’s classmate, showed him flirtatious attention and competed for his attention. Marvel’s wording supports placing her near the start of the chronology, but not confidently labeling her a long-term girlfriend. This is an early romantic interest, not a relationship with the same standing as Gwen and Mary Jane. Marvel’s account of Peter’s love interests describes the flirtation.

  3. Gwen Stacy — college girlfriend and defining love

Peter met Gwen at Empire State University, where he was attracted to her. Their relationship became close and turbulent, and Gwen’s death at the Green Goblin’s hands was a turning point in Peter’s life. Marvel directs readers to The Amazing Spider-Man #121 for her death and Spider-Man: Blue #2 for a look back at their relationship. Marvel’s relationship retrospective and its Peter Parker guide describe Gwen as a major love.

  4. Mary Jane Watson — friend, long-term partner, and wife

Aunt May tried to introduce Peter and Mary Jane before their romance took shape. Peter initially favored Gwen; after Gwen died, Mary Jane stayed beside him as he grieved, and their friendship grew into a long-term partnership. Peter proposed in The Amazing Spider-Man #182 and again in #291; they married in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21, according to Marvel’s Peter Parker reading guide.

That marriage was later erased from history through Mephisto’s intervention, in exchange for Aunt May’s life. The change did not erase Mary Jane’s importance: Marvel describes her as Peter’s close friend and ally in later stories. Marvel’s retrospective discusses the change and their continuing connection.

  5. Felicia Hardy / Black Cat — significant on-and-off romance

Felicia Hardy, the thief known as Black Cat, had a complicated, on-and-off romantic history with Peter. A key distinction is that Felicia was initially drawn to Spider-Man rather than Peter Parker: her interest in the masked hero did not automatically mean she was pursuing the man beneath the mask. Marvel’s Peter Parker reading guide characterizes the romance as complicated and intermittent, and its love-interests retrospective revisits their later dating. It is not one uninterrupted relationship.

  6. Debra Whitman — later romantic interest

Marvel’s Peter Parker reading guide includes Debra, Peter’s lab partner at Empire State University, and describes their romance as ill-fated. The guide does not establish her exact position relative to every other relationship in a complete chronology, so she belongs on a broad list of documented romantic interests rather than in a confidently dated sequence among the major partners. Marvel’s guide is the basis for including her.

What “girlfriend” means in this timeline

Marvel’s accounts use different descriptions for Peter’s relationships: Betty is an early love, Liz’s role is flirtatious, Gwen is a college girlfriend, Mary Jane becomes a long-term partner and wife, and Felicia’s romance is on-and-off. Debra is included as a romantic interest, but the retrospective does not place her precisely in relation to every other entry. The sequence therefore tracks major romantic history, not a claim that every woman listed held the same status or that every event can be assigned a precise date from these summaries.

For issue-level landmarks, Marvel’s guide identifies The Amazing Spider-Man #121 for Gwen’s death, #182 and #291 for Peter’s proposals, and Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21 for his wedding to Mary Jane. These references mark significant story events, not a complete dating chronology.
