He poked fun at the candidates’ contrasting demeanors and at JD Vance’s response when asked whether Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. The debate’s most visible clash came later, when moderator Margaret Brennan corrected Vance on the legal status of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, and CBS briefly muted both candidates’ microphones.
What did Colbert say about the debate?
In his debate-night monologue, Colbert described Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance as “different flavors of dull,” then used their contrasting presentation as comic material. He also singled out Vance’s answer about the transfer of power after the 2020 election and Walz’s response invoking January 6. These are selected jokes reported by TV Insider, not a complete transcript. TV Insider’s October 2, 2024 report
TV Insider reported that Colbert summed up the evening with a Thanksgiving comparison: “your most nervous uncle and your smuggest nephew.” The line framed the debate as awkward and unpleasant, rather than as a sustained shouting match. The reported wording is an excerpt, not a verified full transcript.
Which moments felt most awkward?
Vance did not directly answer whether Trump lost in 2020
Asked whether Trump lost the 2020 election, Vance did not give a direct yes-or-no answer. Walz called that response “a damning non-answer.” The exchange stood out because it put a straightforward question about the election result against Vance’s choice not to answer it directly. CBS News’ debate account and the Associated Press assessment report the exchange.

The Springfield discussion turned into a dispute with the moderator
During a discussion of immigration and Springfield, Ohio, Vance spoke about illegal immigration. Moderator Margaret Brennan said the Haitians who had moved to Springfield were in the country legally. Vance objected to being fact-checked, and he and Brennan talked over one another. CBS then muted both candidates’ microphones. Brennan told them, “Gentlemen, the audience can’t hear you because your mics are cut,” according to the Associated Press. Associated Press coverage of the microphone clash
The sequence was a concrete interruption and moderation dispute; calling it awkward is a judgment about how it played on air. The mute followed the candidates speaking over one another, not a general decision to silence the debate.

The candidates’ contrasting demeanors became part of the joke
Colbert’s “different flavors of dull” line and his reported Thanksgiving analogy made the candidates’ presentation a running comic contrast. Those descriptions are his comedic interpretation, not an objective rating of either candidate’s performance.
Was the whole debate a confrontation?
No. The flashpoints were conspicuous, but they should not be mistaken for the tone of the entire event. CBS characterized the debate as largely cordial and substantive, while the Associated Press described it as civil and policy-focused. The debate began shortly after 9 p.m. ET on October 1, 2024, in New York City; Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan moderated. It was the first and likely only vice-presidential debate of the 2024 campaign. CBS News’ debate coverage; Associated Press assessment

Who did viewers think won?
In a CBS News survey of people who said they watched the debate, 42% said Vance won and 41% said Walz won. Those figures describe the surveyed debate watchers, not all voters, and show a close split rather than a decisive consensus. CBS News’ report

The debate was between running mates arguing about the presidential tickets, not a formal head-to-head comparison of plans for the vice presidency. To assess a candidate’s performance, separate what happened on stage from how commentators interpreted it: Was an answer direct? How did the candidate respond to a moderator’s correction? How did each handle the 2020-election question? And did their demeanor remain civil? That distinction helps explain why a mostly restrained debate could still produce a few moments that drew outsized attention.
