Colbert mocked the contrast; the contemporaneous coverage does not show that Trump caused the decline.
Which Colbert segment does the headline refer to?
It is the February 5, 2018 edition of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The official clip, posted February 6, was titled Trump Touted The Economy As The Stock Market Plunged. The show’s description said television networks switched from Trump’s Cincinnati speech about tax cuts and the economy to coverage of the falling U.S. stock market. The Guardian’s February 6 late-night roundup also described Colbert’s response to Trump praising the economy as the market fell.
The headline’s “tanking” phrasing describes the market’s sharp decline, not a demonstrated causal link to Trump. Colbert’s target was the timing and contrast between the president’s optimistic remarks and the day’s market news.
What did Colbert say?
The Guardian attributed this opening joke to Colbert: “Remember when Donald Trump told us we’d be tired of winning? Well, evidently, the stock market is exhausted.”
#1 Best Overall
On the reported daily movement, the Guardian reproduced Colbert’s line: “Because after losing 666 points on Friday, Monday said, ‘Hold my beer.’ Today posted the greatest single same-day drop in stock-market history: 1,600 points.” The Guardian then reported that the Dow closed down almost 1,200 points.
Colbert also introduced the explanation being discussed at the time: “Now the speculation is that this happened because of fears the Fed will be raising interest rates.” These quotations are reproduced by the Guardian’s contemporaneous roundup; they have not been independently checked against a full episode transcript.

What happened to the Dow that day?
According to the Guardian’s February 6, 2018 account, the Dow fell 1,600 points intraday and finished down almost 1,200 points, erasing its gains for the year. The Guardian described the intraday move as the largest single-day point drop at that time. Those are point movements as reported in 2018, not percentage losses, and are not presented here as independently verified exchange data.
The same report said speculation centered on fears that the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates. Trump was speaking about the economy in Cincinnati while the market was falling. That timing explains the satirical juxtaposition; it does not establish that the speech or Trump’s policies caused the decline.

No. A separate Colbert segment discussed Trump, tariffs, and market concerns in March 2025, as covered by the Guardian on March 11, 2025. That later event is distinct from the 2018 clip about Trump touting the economy during a Dow decline.
