The headline refers to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s August 2024 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in Chicago, during the Democratic National Convention. The transcript records applause and an “AOC” chant after Colbert introduced her, but it does not establish that this was the year’s biggest ovation or that she was overcome with emotion.
What happened on Colbert’s show
Colbert introduced Ocasio-Cortez as a three-term representative and the youngest person ever to serve in the House, according to the show transcript. The audience chanted “AOC,” and Ocasio-Cortez thanked them before talking about watching Star Trek: Voyager with her father as a child. She said the program gave her an example of a woman in leadership. The transcript of the exchange records the introduction, chant and conversation.
Why the headline’s claims need qualification
The transcript documents audience applause and chanting; it does not measure the response against every other ovation during the year. Nor does the transcript independently establish Ocasio-Cortez’s emotional state. “Biggest ovation of the year” and “overcome with emotions” should therefore be read as headline framing, not as verified comparisons or descriptions of her feelings.
How the appearance connects to convention week
The Colbert appearance took place during the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In her convention speech on August 19, Ocasio-Cortez thanked Chicago, Kamala Harris, Tim Walz and Joe Biden, recounted her earlier work as a waitress and her family’s financial hardship after her father died, and urged voters to elect Harris and Walz. The transcript records cheering and an “AOC” chant there as well. CNN’s transcript of the speech provides that context.

Not the 2019 Colbert appearance
Ocasio-Cortez had appeared on Colbert’s show in June 2019 after the first Democratic presidential debate. That separate appearance also drew a standing ovation and audience chants, which can make accounts of the two moments easy to confuse. Axios’s report from June 27, 2019 covers the earlier episode; it is not the Chicago convention-week interview.
