Sorry, Monkeys Won’t Write Shakespeare Before the Universe Ends

The infinite monkey theorem describes what happens in an unlimited mathematical limit—not a realistic deadline. A 2024 model finds non-trivial Shakespeare-length text effectively out of reach within its assumed cosmic horizon.

No—not in any realistic finite sense. The infinite monkey theorem says that random typists would almost surely produce any fixed, finite text if they had unlimited independent attempts. It does not say they are likely to finish Shakespeare before the universe ends. A 2024 analysis concludes that non-trivial Shakespeare-length text is effectively out of reach within its modeled cosmic horizon.

What the infinite monkey theorem actually says

Imagine a typist choosing each key independently at random from a finite keyboard. Any particular finite string—say, a line from Hamlet—has a nonzero chance of appearing in a sequence of keypresses. With unlimited independent attempts, the chance that the string has never appeared tends toward zero. This is an infinite-limit result, connected by the 2024 analysis to the Borel–Cantelli lemma; it is not a timetable for success. Woodcock and Falletta’s 2024 paper

The distinction is simple but decisive: “almost surely, given infinitely many trials” does not mean “probably within any particular finite span of time.” To assess the real-world version, one must specify the number of typists, their speed, the keyboard and the time available.

What the 2024 finite-resource calculation assumes

Stephen Woodcock and Jay Falletta’s peer-reviewed 2024 analysis models a finite population and a finite horizon. Its illustrative inputs are assumptions for calculation, not measurements of actual chimpanzee typing or a definitive forecast of the universe’s end.

Bedtime Originals Plush Monkey Ollie, Brown 8 Inch (Pack of 1)
  • Curly Tails Plush Monkey Ollie is 8" high soft and cuddly
  • 2 tone plush
  • Soft stitched eyes and mouth
  • Care instructions: machine wash in gentle cycle, tumble dry low and remove promptly
  • Curly Tails Plush Monkey Ollie is 8” high soft and cuddly
Model input Assumption
Keys 30 equally likely keys
Typing rate One keypress per second, continuously
Working lifetime About 109 seconds per chimpanzee, just over 30 years
Population A constant population of about 200,000 chimpanzees
Modeled horizon 10100 years, used as an assumed heat-death horizon
Implied working lifetimes Roughly 6.4 × 10103 under those assumptions

Even with those enormous resources, the authors conclude that non-trivial text remains orders of magnitude beyond reach: within their model, it is almost certain not to be produced during the assumed horizon. That is a conditional probability conclusion, not a proof of logical impossibility. The 10100-year horizon is a model input; the paper does not establish it as the universe’s authoritative end date. Why a virtual million-monkey project is different

Jesse Anderson’s 2011 account describes a virtual project that reportedly took about a month and a half. One million simulated processes generated random groups of nine characters, checked those groups against Shakespeare’s works, and retained successful matches until every portion of the corpus was covered. That is cumulative selection: successful fragments are saved and combined. It is not one random typist producing a complete play independently, in order, from beginning to end. Retaining matches changes the problem because the successful guesses are not discarded after each attempt.

Anderson also gives a deliberately simplified illustration for Hamlet: about 130,000 letters, ignoring punctuation, spaces, capitals and apostrophes. In a 26-letter model, the chance of a correct first-try full play is 1 in 26130,000, or about 1 in 3.4 × 10183,946. Those are Anderson’s illustrative assumptions, not the 2024 paper’s 30-key calculation or an exact probability for every edition of the play. Anderson, 2011

So, could monkeys type Shakespeare before the universe ends?

The answer depends on which claim is meant. Under the theorem’s idealization of unlimited independent trials, a fixed finite text appears almost surely in the infinite limit. Under Woodcock and Falletta’s specified finite-resource model, Shakespeare-length random typing is effectively out of reach within the assumed horizon. A project that saves and combines successful fragments can produce a different outcome, but it is not the theorem’s end-to-end random-typing scenario.

Where did the theorem come from?

The origin of the familiar formulation is uncertain. Woodcock and Falletta say it is commonly attributed to Émile Borel or Thomas Henry Huxley, while some accounts trace an earlier version of the underlying idea to Aristotle. Anderson traces a million-monkey formulation to Borel’s 1913 discussion of thermodynamics. These are attributions of related formulations, not grounds for naming one uncontested inventor.
