Charles Pulliam-Moore’s review for The Verge calls Star Trek: Section 31 fun, energetic viewing, with Michelle Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou at its center. The praise is qualified: the film’s comic ensemble and flashy action make it entertaining, but its more serious questions about Georgiou, covert violence and the Federation can feel shortchanged by the comedy.
What is Star Trek: Section 31 about?
The story follows Philippa Georgiou, the Mirror Universe counterpart who joined the secretive Section 31 after appearing in Star Trek: Discovery. She owns a nightclub that doubles as a spaceship. Section 31 agent Alok recruits her for a covert mission involving a dangerous creation by a bioweapons engineer.
Georgiou joins a loose team that includes shapeshifter Quasi, Vulcan-like Fuzz, telepath Melle, exoskeleton pilot Zeph and Starfleet officer Rachel Garrett. Pulliam-Moore likens the crew’s ragtag dynamic to a superhero squad; that is his comparison, not a formal genre label.
Is it fun to watch?
In Pulliam-Moore’s assessment, yes. He praises the lively performances, action and heist-like setup, with Yeoh’s scene-stealing presence driving the film’s comic energy. He describes it as “the sound of scene chewing in space.” The result leans into a conspicuously different flavor of Star Trek rather than a measured, traditional adventure.
#1 Best Overall
The main reservation is tonal. The comedy can sit awkwardly beside the story’s darker material: Section 31’s use of covert violence, Georgiou’s past and the tension between that organization and the Federation’s utopian ideals. The review finds the film entertaining, while arguing that its serious character questions could have had more room to develop.
Do you need to watch Discovery first?
No, according to Pulliam-Moore: “You don’t really need to have seen Discovery to dive into Section 31.” The film is presented as a standalone story, though familiarity with Georgiou’s history adds context.

The original Philippa died; the Georgiou in this film is her alternate-universe counterpart. She once ruled the Terran Empire as a ruthless leader, and that history informs the morally complicated character who later becomes involved with Section 31. Knowing that background helps explain her, but the review says the movie remains accessible without it.
Where and when was it released?
The Verge review announced a Paramount+ release date of January 24, 2025. That is the date reported at the time, not confirmation of current availability. The review does not establish which regions currently carry the film, so check the Paramount+ catalog for your location.
What does the film suggest for Star Trek?
Pulliam-Moore presents the movie as Star Trek’s first nontheatrical feature and sees it as a possible new direction for streaming films in the franchise. He calls its course exciting, while treating further exploration of the surviving characters as potential rather than a confirmed continuation. His review concludes that the film works on its own and leaves its characters in a position that could support future stories.
