James McAvoy says the 2024 remake’s earlier events would not credibly lead to the 2022 Danish original’s fatal ending. As he explained in a September 13, 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director James Watkins wanted a more hopeful conclusion—one that condemns Paddy’s chauvinistic worldview rather than letting the story validate it.
Why did the 2024 remake need a different ending?
McAvoy’s central reason was that the remake’s Ben and Louise behave differently from the visitors in the Danish film. In the interview, he said: “The difference in our film is that everything that came before it wouldn’t lead to that ending.” In other words, repeating the original’s finale would not feel like a believable consequence of the remake’s version of events.

McAvoy also described Watkins’ aim as allowing more hope without making the film gentle. The ending still belongs to a brutal thriller, but its judgment falls on Paddy: the story should not leave his objectionable, chauvinistic beliefs looking correct or rewarded.
What happens at the end of the 2024 film?
The remake’s final act turns the Daltons’ visit into a direct fight for survival. Ben and Louise resist Paddy and Ciara, and their family survives. That gives the visitors agency in the climax where the original’s ending is fatal for the visiting family.

Survival does not make the remake’s conclusion an uncomplicated happy ending. Its violence and trauma remain; the change is that the visitors fight back and have a chance to escape rather than meeting the original’s bleak fate.
How the remake differs from the 2022 Danish original
The title refers to two distinct films: James Watkins’s 2024 English-language remake and the 2022 Danish film Gæsterne, written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup. Universal describes the remake’s premise as Americans Ben and Louise accepting an invitation from a British couple they befriended and bringing their daughter to a country estate.

| Comparison | Speak No Evil (2024) | Gæsterne / Speak No Evil (2022) |
|---|---|---|
| Final outcome | The visiting family survives. | The visiting family meets a fatal ending. |
| Visitors’ role in the climax | Ben and Louise fight back in a direct confrontation. | The original is associated with a much bleaker consequence of the visitors’ passivity. |
| Tone and implication | More hopeful, in McAvoy’s account of Watkins’ intent, while still brutal; Paddy’s worldview is judged. | A more nihilistic ending about the consequences of social passivity. |
The comparison is about more than a happy ending replacing a sad one. The remake changes what the visitors do when danger becomes unavoidable, and that shifts the story’s moral emphasis. The 2022 film’s ending is bleaker; Watkins’ version gives its visitors a chance to resist.
Did James McAvoy watch the original before filming?
No. McAvoy said he watched the original only after finishing the remake, so reproducing its ending was not part of his acting process. His explanation for the changed finale was instead about the remake’s own character behavior and the kind of ending Watkins wanted.
