The 2020 film pairs him with Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic and James Marsden as small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski, who joins Sonic after a power-grid outage draws Robotnik’s attention.
What is Sonic the Hedgehog about?
In Jeff Fowler’s 2020 live-action and computer-generated adventure, Sonic is living on Earth when an accidental power-grid outage exposes his extraordinary abilities. The government sends Dr. Robotnik to investigate. Sonic teams up with Tom Wachowski to evade him and stop him from exploiting Sonic’s power; Tika Sumpter plays Maddie, Tom’s wife.

Paramount describes the premise with the line, “The world needed a hero, we got a hedgehog.” The studio classifies the film as PG and lists it as action, adventure, comedy and family, with a 100-minute runtime. Paramount’s film page has the official synopsis and credits.
Why does Jim Carrey stand out?
Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik is deliberately outsized: a fast-talking, eccentric antagonist whose physical comedy and comic intensity contrast with Sonic’s quick, restless energy. That contrast gives the film a clear source of humor and makes Robotnik more than a plot obstacle. Carrey’s performance is the movie’s most conspicuous comic feature, though whether it is the best part will depend on a viewer’s taste for broad comedy.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls the film “Fittingly fleet and frequently fun, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy — and a fine excuse for Jim Carrey to tap into the manic energy that launched his career.” That is the aggregator’s summary, not a universal verdict; it supports the view that Carrey’s high-energy performance is central to the film’s appeal. Rotten Tomatoes’ page also displays critic and audience aggregates.
Is it worth watching?
If you want a brisk, family-oriented adventure with a recognizable video-game hero and a flamboyant comic villain, the film is an easy fit. Its appeal rests on more than adaptation fidelity: the story pairs Sonic with an ordinary human ally, while the humor and action keep the plot accessible to younger viewers. Carrey’s Robotnik is the main draw for viewers who enjoy energetic, exaggerated screen comedy.
