Sonny’s Bar is a shared-dining restaurant built around wood-fired cooking and a menu that changes with the seasons. In Simon Collins’s June 2025 PerthNow review, the barbecued bread with whipped butter was a highlight, along with beef cruda, coral trout, smoked aubergine and Basque cheesecake. His review is a snapshot of that visit, not a guide to dishes guaranteed to be on the menu now.
What Sonny’s is like
Sonny’s is at 126A Hobart St in Mt Hawthorn, Perth. The venue describes its current approach as shared dining, wood-fired cooking and local ingredients. Its menu changes with seasons, suppliers, the daily catch and what turns up at the market, so expect the selection to evolve rather than rely on a fixed list of signature dishes. In a review published on 28 June 2025, PerthNow critic Simon Collins described a plant-filled, eclectic dining room decorated with bric-a-brac, Yves Klein prints and Grace Jones posters. He reported that Sonny’s had opened in late 2022 in a former Commonwealth Bank branch, founded by Perth bar and restaurant manager Jessica Blyth and named after her rescue greyhound. Collins identified Sofika Boulton as head chef and described her cooking as focused on fresh produce, fermentation and wood fire. What Collins liked—and what he didn’t
Collins’s review offers a useful guide to the kind of cooking Sonny’s served on his visit, though the restaurant’s changing menu means these dishes and prices should not be treated as current offerings.

- Barbecued bread with whipped butter: Collins praised its charred aroma and the rich butter, making this the meal’s memorable opening.
- Beef cruda: He described hand-diced, week-aged sirloin dressed with yuzu and Meyer lemon vinaigrette, then finished with butter emulsion, pecorino and toasted pepper. The review listed it at $24.
- Coral trout: The grilled fish came with roast chicken butter and Goolwa pipis; Collins listed it at $40.
- Smoked aubergine: Slow-smoked aubergine with macadamia butter was his standout side, listed at $18.
- Kipfler potato: The charcoaled potato with smoked butter and Geraldton wax, also listed at $18, was his main disappointment.
- Basque cheesecake: Collins enjoyed the salted cheesecake and considered its $16 price good value.
Those prices are from Collins’s June 2025 visit, not a current price list. He also reported that the menu changed every few weeks at the time, sometimes through small updates and sometimes through broader changes. The venue’s own description now says its menu is constantly evolving.
Collins awarded Sonny’s 17.5/20. That score reflects his assessment of the room, service, wood-fired dishes and drinks list, rather than an objective rating.

Menu choices and current price information
Sonny’s official menu page currently advertises an $85 three-course Chef’s Selection. Collins reported a $70-per-person selection during his June 2025 visit. The two figures come from different dates and sources: the official page is the current advertised price, while the review records what was offered in 2025. The official page does not provide a full itemised menu in its current description, so check with the restaurant for current individual dishes, prices and selection details.
If you prefer to choose dishes yourself, shared plates suit a meal where the group can sample several things; the Chef’s Selection offers a set three-course format. Because the menu changes, the trade-off is between choosing from what is available on the day and letting the kitchen guide the meal—not a guarantee that any dish Collins reviewed will return.

Hours, kitchen closing and bookings
Sonny’s contact page gives these hours, while the homepage uses less specific “late” wording for some services. Kitchen closing times are earlier than the venue’s closing hours. Since schedules can change, check the official contact page before setting out.
