Sombr’s debut album, I Barely Know Her, makes a persuasive case for what pop can gain from intimate heartbreak, distorted vocals and guitar-led hooks blown up to near-anthem scale. It doesn’t invent a new sound, and critics disagree about whether its influences feel fresh. Its appeal is the tension between closeness and bigness: songs that feel personal even when the production pushes outward.
What is Sombr’s debut album?
I Barely Know Her is the debut album by Sombr, the stage name of Shane Boose. Warner Records describes him as a New York City native who grew up on the Lower East Side and later based himself in Los Angeles. The album arrived on August 22, 2025; Apple Music lists 10 songs and a 37-minute runtime. Warner says Sombr wrote the record in full and co-produced it with Tony Berg. Warner Records’ release announcement and Apple Music’s album listing provide the release details.
The track list runs from “crushing” and “12 to 12” through “i wish i knew how to quit you,” “back to friends,” “canal street,” “dime,” “undressed,” “come closer,” “we never dated” and “under the mat.” The title captures the album’s emotional premise: Sombr told Zane Lowe that it is about a deep connection disrupted by an event, leaving the narrator wondering, “Did I even know her?” He also described the title as a joke about writing a whole album about someone he barely knows. Apple Music’s interview excerpts include both explanations.
What makes the album sound different from other pop?
Bedroom-pop vulnerability with more volume
The album’s point of distinction is less a new genre than a change in scale. Its subject matter stays close to the listener—longing, confusion and romantic fallout—while guitars, vocal effects and choruses expand the sound. The Washington Post’s Chris Richards described the move from earlier bedroom-pop work as louder, brighter, stickier and more shrill. He singled out “Back to Friends” and “Canal Street” for their sturdy melodies and harmonized sound. Richards’s August 26, 2025 review hears both the melodic strength and the sharper edge of the production.

Hooks beneath the distortion
Sombr’s vocal treatment is part of the album’s identity, not just surface decoration. Apple Music’s artist profile describes lightly distorted vocals, vulnerable writing and ornate guitar pop; it points to “12 to 12” and “come closer” as examples of the record’s pop-anthem scale. The effects can make a voice feel blurred or raw, while the melodies give the songs a clear route into the ear. Pitchfork’s Hannah Jocelyn also recognizes strong pop instincts and hooks beneath the production, even as her overall assessment is skeptical. Jocelyn’s October 4, 2025 review discusses the hooks alongside the album’s washed-out sound and visible influences.
A coherent emotional premise
The album’s songs belong to a consistent world of romantic uncertainty. That unity gives the production a reason to feel oversized: the arrangements amplify a narrator trying to make sense of attachment and loss. Sombr told Apple Music that each song should sit just outside his comfort zone, emotionally or in production. He called “canal street” the record’s most vulnerable song and the one that means the most to him. Apple Music’s interview attributes those comments to Sombr.

Does I Barely Know Her sound fresh or derivative?
The answer depends on what a listener values. The case for freshness is the combination: personal, bedroom-pop intimacy delivered through brighter, louder guitar arrangements and hooks designed to stick. The album doesn’t need to claim a wholly unprecedented sound to make that combination effective.
The counterargument is that familiar references can be heard through the production, and that the songwriting does not always make its emotional perspective feel as distinctive as its sound. Jocelyn calls the music vague and melancholy, questions the originality of some of its references, and criticizes its treatment of women. Richards also raises questions about the lyrics and notes that the vocal distortion can be piercing. Those are critical judgments, not settled measurements of the album’s originality—but they explain why some listeners may hear an accomplished blend of influences rather than a genuine break from current pop.

Who is the album for?
- Start here if you want: hook-forward guitar pop with romantic vulnerability, a larger production scale and vocals that retain some roughness.
- Listen with reservations if you want: lyrics that consistently offer a fresh perspective or a sound with few audible debts to earlier indie and pop.
- Pay attention to: “Back to Friends” and “Canal Street” for the sturdy melodies and harmonies Richards highlights; “12 to 12” and “come closer” for the anthem-sized pop Apple Music emphasizes; and “canal street” for the vulnerability Sombr says matters most to him.
That mix makes the album an argument about emphasis, not an answer that everyone has to accept: familiar heartbreak can still land with force when the hooks, voice and production make it feel immediate.
