Soft & Quiet is written and directed by Beth de Araújo. Its story follows Emily, an elementary-school teacher who organizes a gathering of like-minded women. An encounter with a woman from her past sets off an escalating chain of events.

The film centers on white supremacist characters and racist violence. Brady writes about its distressing subject from her perspective as an Asian woman; the intensity of her response is inseparable from what the film depicts, not simply from a thriller’s suspense mechanics. If that material is not something you want to watch, opting out is a reasonable choice.
How its one-take approach shapes the tension
Brady describes the film as shot in one take over an afternoon. Rather than breaking the action into a succession of visibly separate scenes, the sustained approach keeps the viewer with events as they unfold. In combination with the escalating story and its subject matter, that form can make the experience feel unusually close and difficult to step away from. This is a description of the film’s style, not a guarantee of a particular reaction.
