Somewhere Quiet is Olivia West Lloyd’s psychological horror-thriller about a kidnapping survivor whose attempt to recover at her husband’s family compound becomes clouded by isolation, unsettling visions and distrust. Jennifer Kim stars as Meg in Lloyd’s feature debut, which premiered at Tribeca in 2023.
What is Somewhere Quiet about?
After surviving a kidnapping, Meg travels with her husband, Scott, to his wealthy family’s remote compound on Cape Cod. She hopes to return to ordinary life, but nightmares and visions unsettle her sense of reality. The family’s unusual dynamic and the presence of Scott’s relative Madelin deepen Meg’s unease and put pressure on her relationship with Scott.
The film’s tension comes from the uncertainty around Meg’s experience and the people around her. Writer-director Olivia West Lloyd described its perspective in a June 7, 2023 interview: “I think that the film is very much about this idea that there, there is no such thing as a clear villain or a clear victim of these things.” That comment offers a useful lens on the film’s ambiguity, rather than a definitive explanation of every event. Is Somewhere Quiet a horror movie?
Yes. Apple TV categorizes it as both horror and thriller, while the New Hampshire Film Festival’s 2023 program describes it as a thriller. Its unsettling visions, nightmares and growing uncertainty give it a psychological-horror edge, alongside its relationship and family tensions. Apple TV’s U.S. listing and the 2023 festival program provide the genre and program details.
