The total solar eclipse of Wednesday, August 12, 2026, has passed. Totality crossed a narrow route over the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, the North Atlantic and northern Spain, with a small corner of Portugal also within the path. Far more people across the Northern Hemisphere could see only a partial eclipse. “Few will see it” describes how limited the land areas in the path of totality were—not a known count of viewers.
Where the 2026 solar eclipse was visible
A total solar eclipse occurs only within the Moon’s narrow shadow, or path of totality. NASA’s mapped route crossed Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean and Spain; its event page also includes a small corner of Portugal. Outside that band, observers in many regions saw the Sun partly covered instead.
Places within the path of totality
The route crossed the Arctic from northern Russia, tracked along eastern Greenland, reached the western fringes of Iceland, crossed the North Atlantic and arrived in northern Spain shortly before sunset. Western Iceland and northern Spain were among the few Northern Hemisphere land areas on the route. NASA also identifies a small corner of Portugal as within the totality path.
Places that saw a partial eclipse
Partial phases were visible across a much broader area, including parts of the northern United States, most of Canada, much of Europe and northwestern Africa. In western mainland Europe and Africa, the Sun set while still partially eclipsed, making it a sunset eclipse for observers there.

Whether a location offered totality or only a partial eclipse depended on whether it lay inside the narrow umbral path. The local viewing circumstances also varied: the eclipse reached northern Spain shortly before sunset, while other points along the route had different local timings. NASA’s interactive map and location tools provide local contact times; the global time of greatest eclipse is not a substitute for a city’s own schedule.
How long totality lasted
NASA Goddard’s 2021–2030 eclipse table lists a central duration of 2 minutes 18 seconds at greatest eclipse. That is a specific point in the event, not the duration for every observer. NASA says most locations in the path had less than two minutes of totality; even near the center, the duration remained under two and a half minutes.

The same NASA table gives 17:47:05 UTC as the time of greatest eclipse and an eclipse magnitude of 1.039. For a total eclipse, NASA defines magnitude as the ratio of the Moon’s diameter to the Sun’s diameter. Local contact and totality times differed by location.
Why only a handful of land areas experienced totality
The totality track crossed large stretches of ocean, Arctic territory and Greenland, leaving only a handful of land areas in the Northern Hemisphere within the path. NASA Earth Observatory identifies parts of Iceland and Spain among those land areas. That geography explains the “few will see it” framing, but official sources reviewed do not provide a count of people who actually watched the eclipse.

Historical satellite cloud-cover measurements cited by NASA Earth Observatory indicate a higher likelihood of clear viewing conditions in Spain than in Iceland. That is a climate-based comparison, not a report of the weather at either location on August 12 and not a guarantee for any particular viewing spot.
How the eclipse was covered remotely
NASA announced a live stream scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. EDT on August 12, 2026. Its release listed totality beginning in Iceland at 1:45 p.m. EDT and in Spain at 2:28 p.m. EDT. Those were event-time broadcast milestones; the scheduled stream is not a current viewing option.

Solar eclipse eye safety
During every partial phase, looking directly at the Sun requires purpose-made solar viewing glasses, a handheld solar viewer or another safe solar filter. Ordinary sunglasses—even very dark ones—and homemade filters are not safe for direct solar viewing. A pinhole projector lets you view the eclipse indirectly; never look through an improvised device at the Sun.
There is one brief exception: observers may look directly without eye protection during totality, when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face. This applies only to people actually inside the path of totality and only while the Sun is fully covered. Use solar protection again before and after totality. This guidance applies to future eclipses; the 2026 event is over.
