DUBU, the professional name of Solo Leveling artist Sung-rak Jang, died on July 23, 2022, after a cerebral hemorrhage stemming from a long-standing health condition, according to REDICE Studio. The studio did not name the underlying condition. His work on the webtoon continued after his death, carried forward by an assistant.
What happened to DUBU?
REDICE Studio announced that Jang had died on July 23, 2022. Yen Press reproduced the studio’s English-translated statement on July 25, 2022: “Mr. Jang had been struggling with a health condition for a long time, and he passed away from cerebral hemorrhage stemming from his condition.” Read Yen Press’s reproduction of the REDICE statement.
The statement does not identify the health condition or provide further medical details. It also does not establish that overwork or any other specific factor caused the hemorrhage. A notice from Japanese company Red Seven, also dated July 25, independently reported the July 23 death and cerebral hemorrhage. Read Red Seven’s notice.
Who was DUBU?
DUBU was the professional name of Sung-rak Jang, also rendered Seong-rak Jang. He was the principal artist of the Solo Leveling webtoon adaptation, not the series’ writer; the story is by Chugong. The webtoon began in 2018, with its vivid action and visual staging helping bring the story of hunter Sung Jin-woo to readers on smartphones and, later, in print.

What did the family request?
REDICE’s statement said the family wished for a small funeral, held at his mother’s residence and attended by family and close friends. Red Seven’s notice likewise described a small funeral requested by the family, specifying close relatives. The notices differ slightly in how they describe who attended, so the most precise account is that the family requested a small, private gathering.
How did the work continue after his death?
In a July 2025 report, French newspaper Le Monde said assistant Disciples took over the following volume after joining the work around volume 16. Disciples described Jang as “a strict but kind master” and said he had learned much from him, adding that he wanted to carry forward the same standards in staging, structure and overall drawing quality. This is Disciples’ perspective as quoted by Le Monde, not a statement from REDICE. Read Le Monde’s July 2025 report.
How large had Solo Leveling become?
Le Monde’s 2025 report gives a snapshot of the series’ reach in France, not a current global total. At the time of its July 2025 publication, it reported 2.5 million copies sold in France and 18 French print volumes published. It also reported that the series had been translated into 25 languages; the article noted a correction to that language count. Those figures are dated and geographically specific, and should not be read as current totals.

Solo Leveling is available in webtoon form and has also been collected in print volumes, as documented by Le Monde. The report’s 18-volume figure refers specifically to the French edition as of July 2025; it does not establish current stock, prices, or availability in other markets. The cited sources do not identify a memorial edition, and buying a volume should not be understood as supporting Jang’s family or a memorial fund.
