Speak No Evil (2024) Review: A Remake That Trades Bleakness for Resistance

The 2024 Speak No Evil keeps its predecessor’s dangerous invitation and social discomfort, then changes the ending: a more active struggle for survival comes at the cost of the original’s bleak force.

James Watkins’s Speak No Evil keeps the 2022 Danish film’s unnerving invitation and social discomfort, but changes its destination: the American family at its center fights back. The result offers a more active, conventional horror payoff—and loses some of the original’s devastating bleakness.

What is different about the 2024 Speak No Evil?

Watkins wrote and directed the 2024 film, adapting Gæsterne, the 2022 Danish horror film written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup. In the remake, American parents Ben and Louise Dalton and their daughter Agnes meet an English couple on vacation, then accept an invitation that draws them into danger. TIME’s explanation of the remake identifies the family and its changed ending.

The central difference is not simply a new setting or cast. The remake changes how the family responds when the threat becomes clear. Rather than preserve the source film’s devastating submission, it builds toward a more active struggle for survival. That shift gives the story a different kind of release, but also changes what the horror leaves behind.

Why did the remake change the ending?

Watkins has said he did not want to repeat the original’s extreme bleakness. In TIME’s account of the ending, he explains that he “didn’t feel the need to make another ‘incredibly bleak movie.’” The new confrontation follows that intention: the family’s resistance creates suspense through action rather than through the source film’s crushing sense of helplessness.

Watkins has also described the adaptation as a way to carry the premise and its themes about social conventions into a different cultural setting and tone. In an interview with Cadena SER, he framed making the same film again as a reason to watch the original instead. That is a rationale for the changes, not proof that every one works.

Does the more active final act pay off?

The remake’s ending is its clearest point of separation from Gæsterne, and its biggest risk. A family that fights back provides a more immediate, action-oriented climax; it also releases pressure that the original sustains through the characters’ inability to act. The change may feel welcome if you want the story to turn toward survival, but it makes the remake less punishing—and less singularly bleak.

The distinction between its slow build and its finish matters. Le Monde’s review praises the unease generated by ordinary behavior, psychology and social habits, while arguing that the last stretch gives way to familiar horror conventions. That tension helps explain why the climax can feel both like a payoff and a retreat: the film spends time making politeness frightening, then leans on more recognizable genre mechanics.

What changes in the characters and cultural setting?

The adaptation changes more than the final confrontation. Den of Geek’s comparison argues that the remake gives the parents more dimension while softening the children’s roles. That emphasis shifts the emotional center toward the adults’ choices and their response to danger. It also alters the balance of the family dynamic that contributes to the source film’s dread.

Watkins relocated the story to a British setting with American characters, aiming to carry over the source’s premise and social-convention themes without simply copying it. He discussed that approach in an interview with Cadena SER; Radio Times likewise reports his intention to retain the setup and themes while taking them in a different direction. The result is an adaptation shaped by perspective as well as plot: an American family navigating a British social setting, with the discomfort of courtesy still doing much of the early work.

SYFY Wire’s interview with Watkins and Scoot McNairy also addresses the changed ending and likability. Those choices can make the remake’s central family easier to follow and root for, but they also direct attention away from the source film’s harsher refusal of an easy emotional foothold.

Who is this version for?

The 2024 film is a reasonable choice if you want the premise’s social unease but prefer a final act in which the threatened family takes a more active role. It is less likely to satisfy viewers seeking the original’s sustained dread and uncompromising bleakness. For a comparison, the most revealing questions are how each film handles its ending, how long it sustains social discomfort before turning to physical action, and how it uses parents, children and cultural setting to shape the tension.
